Pirates

Not sure if this qualifies 100% in the oldschool Category (but I can guarantee that this is made in a very oldschool spirit). Here is a shot of my pirate Orc ship attacking the coast at sunset (due to poor lightning ;) )

The big boat is scratchbuild (based on Tony Ackland plans) and almost finished, the small boat is from Games of War, the pirates are from Foundry, the Orcs are from Foundry, Black Hat, and there is one Citadel Freebooter Space Ork, the shepherd and sheeps are from Foundry. The scenery is hand made (it's a 2'x4' part of my modular gaming table).

Wow - cracking picture!

That is one tasty looking table - the ship and minis are rather nice too 8-)

I reckon the shields/decoration on the Orc ship alone give you loads of Oldschool cred ;)

Pirates are old school, just look at the old UK AD&D modules! Just because 3rd ed never got round to pirates doesn't mean they were of the radar. Gary Chalk did an article on ship to ship combat that I understand he was very happy with, worth digging out?

Really nice.

Check out “All the Nice Dwarves Love a Sailor” by Gary Chalk in White Dwarf 82 - a few rules for sailing, boarding, attacking etc - plus Garys amazing boat models.

I know of this article, I do even have the french version that was published in the french magazine 'Le Hérault Citadel" before the launch of the french version of White Dwarf.

And yes Pirates are definitively old school in my mind, that's why I did ask Kev Adams to sculpt those nice pirate goblins for me !

I like that ship, I'm one of the younger/newer edition types and it still looks very Orcy to me. An object lesson right there, not everything needs spikes and chains. Kudos!

Blood nice! If you want to make it more old school, there were some pre-slotta pirates made by Citadel in the thieves and rogues range. I've got a small band of them that I was going to paint up as a team for the last LPL's final round. Never got to do it though... =/

Ha! Good picture.

Reminds me of the time I sent a force to Araby to fight in one of the Animosity Campaigns. Here you can see a boat of scouting Marienburgers landing on the shore of the desert land...

where did you get the boat from Padre? Is it scratchbuilt? I'm toying with the idea of making a couple of pirate ships & a small skaven fleet. any suggestions before I cock up a load of balsa would be great. :)

Ahh, like many things in my figure photos it is not exactly what it seems. I have owned entire one sided cowboy movie towns at times. I don't use the pc to create the illusion, but physically make things. The boat there looks ok, there. In reality it is a clumsily built and crudely shaped conversion of a pen box or something similar) with a front stuck on. To use the correct terminology (I don't skimp on research) no sheer, no tumblehome, no graceful lines. This boat is truly the most unweatherly, crank and ugly vessel to (dis)grace the seas.

But yeah, in the photo it looks ok.

To answer your question better, I have over the years kept an eye out for boats and ships in junk shops, toy shops, etc - always buying cheap. Here are some more shots that show some of the results (lifted from a variety of fluff/connecting stories in many campaigns)...

I could go on, and on, but you get the idea. Junk, conversions, toys - all turned into set dressing.

Oh, and while I was surfing the webbly-enormitude I found an old picture I like, which has no boats in it but a lot of merry seamen ...

I have asked before, but must ask again - would you guys (i.e you oldhammerers) like me to put some of my illustrated story-campaign threads on here??

I've seen them on Warhammer Fantasy Battle Reporter Forum (your batreps) so I for one would say definitely!

I picked up those Pirate Orcs too, love them! Hoping to mix in some of Treps' tasty Pirate Gobbos and maybe some Freebooter stuff for a Mordeim warband. They'll be the scourge of the sky in their air-galleon which is currently sat by the sink in my girlfriend's bathroom... has been for a long time now! :?

I don't suppose anyone knows where I can get my hands on those ship plans?
There were available for free on the foundry web site a long time ago, and were then deleted when they were printed in the Foundry Compendium, I still have the free pdf that were on the foundry website, MP me if you want them.

Cheers
