Oldhammer Ahoy

Funnily enough, one of my backburner projects at the mo is early HYW naval, using revell cogs and foundry HYW figures. By on the 'backburner', I mean that I impulse bought four ships on ebay, half built one, then stuck them all in my mam and dad's loft before buggering off to Nottingham (then forgetting about them completely before seeing this thread). I was thinking of expanding into fantasy as well (no, honest) and maybe using some of the 28mm scale waterlined sea monsters from black hat (so I can probably add a couple of monsters to the mix).

Anyway, enough of my waffle. Sign me up to the project, and I'll be able to bring a few extra ships as well as 'Bretonnian' crews for people who don't have time to make owt, or people who just fancy playing in a game on the day(s).

Some bits and bobs that might be of interest:

Black Hat - Flagship games (sea dragon, kraken, mini submarines)

Scheltrum - 28mm Japanese and Korean (no photos, just drawings, unfortunately)

Ironclad - VSF submarine

Warbases - Viking and Norman raiders

I reckon I'll see what I can make myself using foamboard and wooden coffee stirrers, though.

Anyone going to make a call on crew size? I'm going for two 11"-18" ships so according to the Compendium rules they'll need a crew of 8 plus any warmachine crews and boarding parties. According to the 40K online rules they'll only need 4 but will count as large ships. Also, are we using 3rd Ed rules, 5th Ed Skirmish or Mordheim? :?

I would be very much up for this if I am in the UK at the time being that I am in 'down under' at the moment. My modelling/converting capabilities currently stretch to mini level so I would be seeking some kind of undead vessel I could easily convert or....would units be allowed that aren't ships but can travel on water? Aka mer-people/seal people/sea monsters etc

I can't see why not... indeed, Foundry have a decent range of such.

With all this talk of naval battles, I had a quick go at an Orc raft/barge type thing. I loved the rafts shown in the General's Compendium and made an even simpler one at the time.

This is just something quick I made in an afternoon using parts I had to hand. I'm still happy with it though. I'll hopefully get it painted soon!

I think we should go with the generals compendium ... which is 6th edition, it uses the 6th edition rules ... skirmish was included in the main rule book in 6th. For crew sizes I think I have put my thoughts in the first post. If folks want bigger crews that's fine ... but it results in longer games.

Not a problem with any of this 8-) , any chance someone can put a PDF on the system - so that those of us who haven't got a copy can start singing from the same song sheet? Before we go too far down the wrong road!

In hope

PS The build is coming along quite nicely, will post pictures when I can. :D

No problem with that, except not having a 6th Ed rulebook- I bet there are a fair few at 99p floating round the bay of e. What I meant was, what are we going with 'crew required to sail the vessel' since this will influence my choice of miniatures.

On the subject of bay of e... who is it pushing up the prices of plastic pirate ships on there? And where did all the Freebooter's fate stuff disappear to? I feel the Oldhammerers have been hitting the auction waves! :)

I don't think you'll actually need the 6th edition rulebook just the generals compendium. The warhammer rules work just as well for individual figures as units. Just think of units as multi-wound models and you'll get the idea. The generals compendium suggests that each figure acts as an individual unit rather than a block. The compendium rules will work without referral to 6th ed.
