Oldhammer Ahoy

That would be half the fun!

Actually I think a real Pork Pie would make a suitable hull - then you get your lunch out of it and can model battle/Halfling damage as the game goes on.

Right thats it, I'm here, Master of Halflings and all that, to defend them from scurrilous comments. Obviously the best Halfling boats would be made of goblin war turtles. Once the inside is eaten out they can be turned upside down and even provide armoured hulls :)

On a more serious note I'm not sure its possible to get a table big enough for what's being planned. I've played a few naval battles with much smaller scale ships and a 6x4 table is barely big enough to play on. If that large room just behind the Marquee that they showed us on the tour was finished would we be better playing on the floor? There was a large 28mm Sky Galleons of Mars game at Salute a few years ago and they used the floor if I remember correctly. Otherwise there will be no room for manoeuvres.

In which case perhaps it would be best to break it down into several smaller games on Fri and Sat (each involving, say, no more than 8 craft/ flying things/ whatever, maybe fewer? I don't know the rules so I can't make a reasoned judgement myself) and then maybe a landing action for the surviving ships on day 3.

That way you still get the "spectacle" of many ships on the table on one of the days, but less complicated as they are simply landing, with the crew disembarking within the first couple of turns.

Would also mean people wouldn't be tied up with messing about in boats for all 3 days!

I would like to take part in this, for sure, it seems the obvious thing to do with my sea elves.

I'd love to see you model that - War Tortoise Ajax will live on!

Didn't Bryan have a pond in his garden?

Seriously though this would be great played out on the floor but we'll need a cheap source for a lot of blue cloth.

In terms of scenery - not that we want to clutter up the space by the sounds of it - I do have the Large Hill Top Ruin that was given to me several years ago and should really be seeing some action by now. Would be a good site for a cannon as part of some coastal defences.

Manoeuvres!? What we do think this is Star Fleet Battles?

Your ship is a wooden box intended to transport your little mans along the shortest possible route between your wooden box and the closest enemy wooden box, hit it hard, and then engage in vicious close quarter combat atop burning, blood-slick decks!

The more wooden boxes the merrier!

Honestly, some people... :)

Hmm, good point Coop, I must apologise for my wannabe goblin pirate captain. He's been devouring a book on tactics recently and must have gotten some 'ideas'. He has been disciplined :)

There is now a BOYL15 section if we wanted to move this over there?

I've now gone and bought myself a 1:50 long ship and some Scallop shells and dolphins to make some sea chariots. Vikings versus sea elves on fantasy versions of jet skis has got to be a good place to start before I get all 17thC with me boats. Actually now I think about it I have some sahuagin knocking about too. Darn I need to get some sharks now too.

Right Erny, we need to get done practice engagements in as soon as we have serviceable vessels and shake down the rules.

Yes - and count me in! I think the bastard offspring of the ruleset in the General's Compendium and Gary Chalk's "All the nice dwarfs..." is probably a good place to start.

Nice one, I've got two 18 inchers on the way and I'm pretty sure I started two smaller vessels a whole back, I'll have to resurrect them.

The post is from 2003 (but what's eleven years amongst friends? That's practically Newhammer rubbish in this social group!) but here's one version of the Warhammer Ahoy! rules

http://www.40konline.com/index.php?topic=46652.0

Three classes of ship - up to 5", up to 10", and over 10"

Crew minimums to function are 1, 2 and 4 respectively. Maximum crews are 4, 10 and unlimited respectively.

Wow! those ships and crews are tiny in comparison to the generals compendium sizes.
(Now in the first post).

I've been reading the General's Compendium rules and rather like them. In addition to your monsters, we're also going to need sharks

I think they may be the best set to go with but not aware if they were ever updated/improved.

I have a BIG plastic shark already ... it is about the scale of the Man-o-war shark in relation to these boats. So it would be a Megladon?
Don't have a shoul of sharks though ... should be easy enough to sort out a few fins. :D

There hasn't been much activity on the Warhammer Ahoy yahoo group recently so it might take a while to get access to the files on that site. Meanwhile if anyone needs the rules from the Generals Compendium ask and thou shall etc etc. Nudge Nudge Wink Wink.
