Old school figures you hated

Two part chaos warriors/imperial knights as infantry (they're grand as cavalry), they look awkward when on foot with those horrible drainpipe legs.
But that's probably the only metal models up to third edition I didn't like.

I must admit to being terribly disappointed with the plastic terminators in the original space hulk boxed set, not that they're were many good plastic models back then, but at least the genestealers looked good enough to stand alongside their metal counterparts, the plastic terminator models however were just horrible next to the wonderful RTB09 lads. A friend and I bought space hulk between us, and I thought 'Cool! 10 terminators to add to my placcy space marine squads', well, at least until we opened the box :(
 
Am I a bad man if I admit to not liking many of the RT era orks?

The "trooper" type models. Many are so terribly hunched, etc.

There's a lot to love in the more characterful ones of the era ("commisorks" anyone?) but there's a lot of dreck besides.

They mostly look rushed, especially the early ones. I'm guessing Kev had lots on his plate at the time and there were deadlines. The drivers for the warbike/wartraks were pretty poor. Way under scale & a bit flat.

I didn't (and still don't) like 3rd ed. elves at all, too; even if I had a pretty eclectic collection back then (here in Italy Citadel miniatures were not officially imported yet, few shops had them in stock and you could only find a few blisters per race), I never bought one, as they looked feminine, static and too "clean" to my eyes
 
Okay I'm just gonna put it out there (here?).

I never liked Space Marines! Ok, the old RT plastics set did have some charm but other than that I've never understood the hype. Plain, dull and boring to paint - and their weaponry just kept becoming more boring by the years, fair enough Forgeworld have given them a revival but to me it's too late. Hate is such a strong word though, I may just be indifferent :)

Yeah, I don't rate Morley at all.

Otto von Bismarck is right pointing out the 3rd Ed Blood Bowl Dark Elf team - but I think that all three of the Elf teams in 3rd were utter pants, as was much of the 3rd Ed Blood Bowl range in its entirety.
Sure, the 'flings are great - but who plays 'flings anyway? Plus, there's only four of them. And yeah, the Chaos Warriors are OK - for everyone who can't simply clip off the weapons of some super-cool Goodwin Warriors.
Everything else in that range is just a huge step-down from 2nd Ed. Morely is the reason why I never felt the urge to get an "every Blood Bowl mini" collection going.
And come to think of it, the Morely Wodd Elves for Warhammer were just ridiculously bad, too.

First, there were Goodwin Wardancers. And they were good. Then there were Morley Wardancers and they were pants. There also were Goodwin Chaos warrioirs and CHampions, and then there were Morley Warriors.

Hm. Maybe that guy was just pushed to fill shoes too big for him but still... anything Morley and I'm out.
 
I wonder whether Gary Morley had a specific style, or whether he was directed to increase size of things like hands and feet and develop a more cartoony look for the mid-1990s GW ranges - Colin Dixon and Aly Morrison's work from the same period shares similar characteristics. The corresponding red period from the studio paint jobs certainly didn't help either.

I'm sure Gary has done some decent stuff...I just can't think of it right now!
 
I kind of feel bad with all the Morely hate. I've met him a few times and he's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet.

Never met him but to be honest, the whole Red era is just full of rushed sculpts and awfully flat poses (thouh I do fancy some for pure nostalgic reasons), every sculptor's work in that period was clearly not what it was earlier or what it'd be afterwards. Gary Morley is a talented chap who did most of what we kow of him at this precise period and we've just remembered that from him...
 
Did he make the large 5th edition (?) chaos warriors? Those really aren't terrible, they just suck when compared to goodwin's work.
 
I wouldn't be too hard on Gary as it was likely the studio direction at the time that dictated style. In the case of Nagash, it's GW's stupid fault for essentially going with the "joke" head for Nagash & it wasn't Gary's intent to use that version. Some of his Wights were actually pretty solid.

Look at other 4th stuff like the Lammasu from Alan Perry, the Black Orcs & Night Goblins from Kev, Colin Dixon's Jezzail teams etc. It's all a mess! :lol:

Gary Morley's 5th ed. High Elves are some of my favourite models, he had a real knack for those arrogant faces and the jewelry, weapons etc were always well defined. Also the sculpts more characterful than what I was used to (wizards sculpted actually casting as opposed to fumbling about with staffs in one hand and blades in the other, how do they get to their spell components?). The re-release of the high elves in that time was pretty exciting for me as a kid so rose-tinted goggles maybe, but screw it, we're all suckers for nostalgia!
