Old school figures you hated

funnily enough, that ariel is about the only one of that period wood elves that i'd have.

has anyone mentioned the first metal tyranid warriors yet?

i think these are the absolute worst. the original plastic tyranid warriors were absolutely beautiful miniatures. i couldn't get enough of them back then and i'm always on the look out now. but these are abominations. why are they skanking?

Wow, I rather like the late 4th ed. wardancers (despite the flat poses) and many of the 2nd army book release high elves :(

this thread quickly moved from 80's models to an "I don't like 4th edition onwards" topic, which will go predictably on a forum like this anyway :)

Bringing it back to the 80s then - here's a bit of a stinker from the Barbarian range. He's in such an unnatural pose it irks me.

Those Hulk Hogan mustaches were all the rage back in the day you know. In all the photos and movies from the era :)

I had him and really regret converting him, very badly, into some sort of space pirate. All I did was cut off the axe and stick on a plastic bolter. No idea where he is now but if you have one you hate so much you'd like to give him away....

Oh and I love most of the 90's sculpts but for different reasons to my love of 80's sculpts.

I would if I could Erny but I don't. I turned him down recently (which I'm sure I'll regret sometime in the future)

So what do you like about him now?

Interesting Zhu...opposed to separate shields in general, or just separate plastic shields? For me the plastic shields freed up a lot of models to become instantly more accessible for converting. All those one-piece casts hunched over their shields are pretty much impossible to do anything with, whereas the flatter sculpts (with limbs akimbo!) are much easier to use. I admit, the one piece models tend to have better posing having been designed 'in the round'.

I wonder why they did it? I suspect that the likes of the Regiments of Renown could just as easily been sculpted with their shields in place. Or was the idea to allow for variety?

It seems like at the time there was a lot of "what new can err do for the sake of being new" that I suspect had a lot to do with it.

I might have him actually. WTT for a badly converted Hulk Hogan space pirate  (but seriously I'll have a look tonight if I remember ).

There is that, definitely a factor.

Then there's the annoying shield boss that sticks out of the mini if you don't want to have it with a shield - and have to file down if you want a flat shield - which never is, because there is always a mismatch.

Then there is that shields just aren't that thin and the rims are not that fat. They always look kind of toy-ish, slightly cartoony by being so exaggerated. And some of the shapes are just too decoative, maybe ok for a character, but for the rank and file they're crazy.

I do quite like the more "realistic" separate metal ones done by Hasslefree and Otherworld etc. but overall I prefer the integrated ones - if citadel had done something more like those back in the day, the other flaws might not be as annoying.

I'm probably wrong, but I got the idea that they had to order an amount of product from the plastics manufacturer, so slotta-bases and separate shields were done to cover this, rather than overstocking on the bases.

I have a bunch of these guys who take to the gaming table alongside the plastics and a set of three metal ones in the same style as the plastic ones.

I kind of feel bad with all the Morely hate. I've met him a few times and he's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet.

Well, I envy you. I've never met any of the GW folks; would love to stand them a few pints and chew the fat about then and now and toy soldiers and stuff.
I'm sure Morley is a great guy and even though I don't rate most of his work at all, it's still waaaay better than anything I have produced - so far, that is.
But I'm not fair in my judgement. I'm completely subjective and I just don't like at least 80% of the stuff he's done for GW.

Yeah, I agree. What really bothers me most about this guy though are the ridiculous horns on his head. What kind of animal is that even?

But then, I do love the beard.

Thing is, as paltry as my collection of barbarians is, this guy is part of it. I have no idea what to do with him, though. He's too over the top to be part of the Norse raid, he's too tame to be a Chaos thug.

I think it is just the horns and the facial hair. He's also a bit on the small side. Whats not to like about a short arse 80's cheesebarian with uber horns on his head.

That and I guess nostalgia.

I've always assumed that the shields and the slotta bases were all about using less metal and more plastic. I bet they paid for themselves over the years considering how many small lumps of metal they didn't have to cast.

Oh and I also like them loads. Thankfully I have quite a pile of them considering ebay prices for them.

You made me laugh so hard at 'cheesebarian' that i nearly woke the baby and my wife frowned :s

I found him in my leadpile btw and my offer stands - i will trade him for your butt-pirate conversion and nothing else but the conversion! Find him
