Old school figures you hated

The Jugger certainly sucked big time.
However, is this gem too recent to qualify?

I think you could still buy that from GW until recently.

Dunno, but 4th ed is where the Old School/New School line is drawn for me. There is really too much stuff from 4th ed, & the years that followed, that falls into the ugly bucket. Huge disappointments from the Undead, Chaos, & Skaven lines from that era.

Nagash was probably one of the more anticipated models, given the sweet JG illustration in the army book. I read Gary Morley's explanation about why the model was an epic fail years later, but the sight of it stings. ;)

4th edition generally features very chunky models but there are a few gems in the range. It's funny how much of a downgrade in sculpting quality there was in 4th/5th edition.

Chaos is a great example. You have amazing looking warriors and knights in third but everything goes downhill after.

i do like the jugger. it's ridiculous, but i love it's stupid face. one day i hope to have half a dozen of them, or more! i currently have none. perhaps i should offer a removal service for unloved juggers.

the oldhammer model that always upset me most was the Hero Quest Orc. it's just not a position that anyone would stand in. there's nothing wrong with the model apart from the arm above head.

actually, the arm above head i was never a fan of at all, but some are worse than others. i also think the RT Imperial Army figures where they all have hunchbacks and are leaning over their weapons are pretty awful. it's such a shame, because some of those range are lovely, but the hunchbacks.... blurgh

This will ruffle some feathers but I have always loathed the Perry dwarfs. Way too skinny for my tastes. They don't look like dwarfs!

Yup, consider feathers ruffled here. To me Perry dwarfs are the only proper dwarves - instead I blame Marauder for making dwarves a big fat belly with an over-sized beard attached, and everything since seems to have followed suit :(

My least favourite figure back in the day was one of the High Sorcerors of Chaos (right hand of the two) - http://www.solegends.com/citc/c02wizards.htm - which seemed just a big heavy blob of lead. Now I wish I knew what'd happened to it...!

I also agree with the boar boyz suggestion that started this thread - 09 on that catalogue picture is seriously disappointing, and I somehow have a duplicate of him. And my favourite (01) has somehow gone missing in the intervening years.

oh man...stupid face... so good

This is also going to get me banned but I despise a lot of the old per slotta base figures.

Heresy!
The joy of pre-slotta is in the diversity of poses and the "blank canvas" that the lack of detail offers. Like Olley stuff, I think you either love or hate the pre-slottas.

It's not like 'pre slotta' can really be taken as a singular thing, there's a wide variety of sculpting styles and levels of detail going on, some of the finest most delicate sculpting I know is on some of those models, but other look like someone cast blobs of old chewing gum up.

Also, there is nothing conceptually wrong with the juggernaut, just the execution. The afore mentioned Zoids did it much betterer:

Funnily enough the Runequest 2nd 2edition (1980) entry for Rhinocerous has "Juggernaut of Prax" for an opening line... coincidence? I think not ;)

Agree with CitadelCollector regards Aragorn being overwrought (quilted shield? WHAT!?!), but poor old Elrond? Really? what's he done to deserve anyones scorn?

BTW I didn't even know who Gary Morley or Nagash was until someone on this forum told me about it. 4th Ed is way, way off my "old school" detectorometer.

How dares't thou besmirch the figure that got me into Wargaming! Next you'll be having a bash at the gargoyle.... ;)

For me the joy of the preslotta stuff is seeing where a lot of great sculptors cut their teeth. The lack of detail, rough bits, lumpy faces etc. all give me hope that one day I may be a decent sculptor too!

For me, I hate every pre-slotta model until I see it painted. Without paint they always look lumpy and detail-less but when painted they often look really good (ho check or Harry's logs for some excellent examples).

I'm right with you there.
This place has really changed my opinion of a lot of the preslottas, which (being a bit before my time) I must admit to previously holding in "low esteem"

funnily enough, and despite everything i said... i love the gargoyle, and recently painted one up as a daemon prince for my chaos army. the thing i didn't like about the gargoyle was the smooth contouors of the wings. i failed miserably to paint them. that might be a Me issue though!

jugger question

What's the deal with the all gold head on the second jugger from the left!

unreleased?

uncatalogued?

conversion?

Ha, I'm not even bothered by those 90's Dark Elf BB players. The witch elves are just as ugly as the 80's WHFB ones in my eyes (despite owning both!). I guess I just don't mind the "arms up" or "YMCA" poses so many hate.

What I never liked were any of the Squat models or Zoats! Didn't want them when I could buy them new, don't want them or miss them now. GW did miss a good chance of making a new Zoat model when they made new rules for Zoat characters, though. Seemed an odd thing to do.

Eh they made new rules for zoat characters? Not being following new stuff since 3rd edition, but could you please elaborate a bit

It was a token entry in the Storm of Magic expansion for 8th ed. Fantasy. Zoats are able to be 'bound' to an army and use life magic in addition to some fluffy forest based skills.
