Mordheim scenery (Witch Hunter Watch House)

Re: Mordheim Buildings....The Undertaker's 05/02

Fellow table builder, I salute you to your skill and dedication.
Your level of detail turns very nice buildings into pieces of art.

Re: Mordheim Buildings....The Undertaker's 05/02

Thanks for that. The use of the grey is something I would never have thought of for timber but it really works.

What colours do you use for timbers/wood in general?

I usually start with a dark brown and highlight with a lighter shade.
Then two shades of grey (not 50!), a dark and light.
I then use Army Painter shades over the top if I want them to look more brown (interiors mainly) and finish with a very dry Ivory drybrush on exterior wood.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, chaps.
:)

Niibl: You have a response to your PM.

John: Glad to be of some assistance, mate.
:)

The next update will have to be posted tomorrow as I have not had time today.

Re: Mordheim Buildings....The Undertaker's 05/02

Any chance we can see a group shop of a bunch of these lined up together on a table?

Re: Mordheim Buildings....The Undertaker's 05/02

Great stuff. Lovely tones and textures to everything.

How did you make the walls to your brothel?

Have you got a plog somewhere with WIP's of all this?

The walls are mostly carved foam.
The design is simple 'drawn' into the foam with a pen.
I do have a few WIP shots of those buildings shown so far, there are a few shots of the ground floor of the Brothel earlier in the thread.
Here are a few of the Docks, which were mostly carved from foam too...

The Dock sections, undercoated after the initial carving on the foam...

And a couple of close-up shots showing the stonework.

I don't seem to have any of the 'napkins as water stage' but here are some of the 'water' painted.
The gaps are where the original resin pieces will slot in.

The 'water' was quite simple.
Some suitable paper napkins were found, kitchen roll would have worked just as well, but finding kitchen roll without a pattern embossed in it is quite difficult. The napkins I chose just had small dimples embossed and these would work just fine if they showed after painting.
The surface areas that were due to be the 'water' were painted with watered-down wood glue and the napkins placed on and then just pushed around with a wet brush until I got the effect I was looking for, to attempt to simulate waves or ripples.
Once happy with this, it was just a case of painting another layer of watered-down glue and waiting for it to dry out.
There were a couple of areas that were built up slightly higher to represent waves splashing against the sides of the ships that would be glued in place later.
The whole thing, once dry, was then painted Humbrol Black-Green.
On top of this a coat of Windsor and Newton Olive green was wetbrushed, and then a few layers with white added to the olive in increasing amounts was drybrushed on.
A final heavy wetbrush of white was added in a few areas to try and create a good effect.
Here are a couple of shots taken as they stood at this point;

You can see one of the ships in the background of this shot, as well as the fruit bowl, (the contents of which I was particularly proud of the finish on).
;)

A couple of closer shots of individual elements;

The white area on the last picture is where one of the ships will be fixed.

After this they were all given various washes to 'dirty' them up and the resin sections were added.

Here are some pictures that were taken at about the time that these first few buildings were made....(some of the things on the table are still WIP at this point).

More stuff (lots more) was built after this.
I shall post another one tomorrow.

I should point out that the fourth picture down shows the Undertaker's in its initial guise before the second floor was added...

That's an exciting battleground to play on!

Thanks, Subedai!
That was the table at the time that I have reached with the buildings posted so far on this thread.
There are a fair few more buildings made since then still to come.
This table was bulked out with pre-painted bought stuff that has since been relegated to the scenery 'cave', but does still see action sometimes.

The next piece of scenery that I made for Mordheim was this , which only took a couple of hours start to finish....

The Shrine of St. Agnes

This is a piece that I have been wanting to build for a long time.
Ever since I found the half-naked statue in the dolls-house section of a toy shop, I knew that I wanted to use it in some way.

It is a wonderfully detailed sculpt and I had played around with various ideas of how to use it.
I knew that I also wanted to include the open grave resin item that I have had for a long time.
That was part of a resin ruins set for the Celtos game. the other sections have been used on some Island sections that I made years ago and forgot about, with a couple of remaining parts making it into the Temple.

There was something lacking, though. It needed to be livened up in some way.
I had messed around with various Hirst Arts stone sections that I had, but it just did not look right, whatever I did.

I had put all thought of completing this section away to the back of the bits box, until I saw a post on the LAF forum for Dr Who miniatures- The Weeping Angels.
Dr Who Adventures magazine was giving away sixteen toy angels with that weeks edition and it struck me.
They were perfect!
The magazine was only £2.50, with 16 statues in the perfect scale. I had to have it.

So, with the dolls house statue, the resin grave and sixteen toy angels, I delved into the bits box for the appropriate number of plastic bases to provide the plinthes for the statues, I set to with a vengeance.
And came up with this;

The Shrine of St. Agnes.

Shrine003.jpg

A close-up of the statue

Shrine007.jpg

And, lastly, a few pictures with some Old Skool Citadel figures to show the scale

Shrine013.jpg

Shrine012.jpg

Shrine010.jpg

I am very happy with how it has turned out.
It has also proved useful in many different games and genres, from classical Greece right through to Pulp and Call of Cthulhu.

I hope you like it!

Quick, simple and cheap.
My favourite kind of scenery.

Very nice, and I enjoyed reading about its history.

Re: Mordheim Buildings....WIP of ruined houses 11/02

Time for some house ruins from the lower quarter.

As I have been asked for some WIP shots.....:

It began with this....

and becomes......
