Man O'War plastic mast sizing

ManicMan

Lord
While I can't say I'm really interested in Man o'war on the whole... I've ended up picking up a model while I was getting some other bits and It'll probably arrive by the end of the week. It's a metal model and looks to be complete Apart from the plastic mast set which came with alot of the different boats/ships they released. I got a picture of it from lostminis but I'm wondering about the size of them. I know little of this game but though the model looked nice enough and would go with some bits.. even if not in any real gaming sense.

the Masts are pretty generic all being the same but I got a few ideas of what I can do for Replacements and yeah.. I know I can wait till it turns up to check the hole sizes and stuff but.. I like to be a bit prepared ^_^ So just wondering about what the sizes are

Wow. It is many moons since I've seen a table with that game in progress. There was a gaming store across town that had some players but nothing in the stores I frequented. No idea on the mast size. How is the model? Good quality?

Looks a good model but I can't say that I'm that interested in the game. I believe you needed fleets of 1,000 pts each and 1 model does not a fleet make ^_^

I'll break out the measuring instruments in a bit and let you know the sizes.
thanks ^_^

Looks like the main mast diameter was 1.8mm. The little rope section they had on them for decoration take that out to 2.2mm. Second hand sprues are about £10+

The cross pieces were various lengths to account for wider sails and so forth. They start out at about 1.2mm in the centre and go down to 0.7mm at the ends. Again they have 'rope' detailing which adds some diameter in places, seems to be about 0.4mm extra, something of that order.

I need to (re) collect a few more ships so I can host some games. Loved the game back in the day and have my Elf ships, but everything else is off with the sibling. I did managed to get a copy of the game however not that long ago ago. Alas generally quite expensive second hand still.

yeah, looks a bit pricey. I'm pretty sure from the photo I got I can easily make printable versions of them but I doubt I'll use that (but might be a bit of fun ^_^). Since all ships appear to use the same masts, that does kinda remove alot of flavour from different races... though even if you do ignore the fact that most likely, one race came up with ships and the others copied, you do have Convergent evolution to deal with so it's not a major issue. But I'll do something with more style ^_^ Hopefully I'll have it by Friday and I'll show off bits. not that it's some big secret but I do love a bit of a fun game like not revealing for a bit extra. It was part of an order which ... is meant to arrive between today and Thursday but today does appear a bit fast.

Thanks ^_^

Okay, Model turned up yesterday and as I had been well stripped (clear signs it had been painted up before.. or more, someone had filed some of the bits but not quite enough) I've glued it together (4 parts, main body, two paddle wheels and main 'thing'). I was gonna take a photo but need new batteries in my camera (also kinda need to finish and print up a new body. That camera has a number of issues with the shell which basically means the battery compartment is held together with a elastic band ^_^, So I wanted to make a new custom shell I was gonna print for it). But..

While it was sold as a Skaven Deathburner, I knew it wasn't. It is a Skaven Doombringer, basically the screaming bell of the seas. As my main army is Skaven, It appears a good thing to add. I plan to base it BUT have it removable. Like I said before (I think), I doubt I'll ever play a game of Man O'War (though as the Skaven only had 3 unit types, I wouldn't be out of the realms of possibility to atleast get one of each model.. the Warp-Raiders and Deathburners came in packs of 3 so... I might be on the look for them at some point) I like the idea of not having it fixed as a Diorama piece. As the underside of the boat is hallow, it also saves me having to drill out spots for Magnets, but I can easily make a nice water base with a couple of magnets, which will attach to the boat.

My plan for the Masts is to make them metal. I'm gonna have a try at sculpting one, make a mould and cast them up. Much better then plastic originals of resin repro (or bootlegs in the case of some being very much 3D scans). I've kinda started with the main mast pole, I'll be sculpting the rope bits. The first issue I've got is the top of the mast. the original, probably for casting reasons, is kinda like a sealed... something I don't know the name of... (modern ships have things like that.. and can have crows nests with 3 floors) but this kinda doesn't tie up with the size of the ropes. In fact, I've no clue what kinda scale most of this boat is.. I hear that Man O'war didn't really have too much of a scale between units but.. well, the Great Bell has a ladder on the side, so I can used that to work out something if I say the rungs are a standard distance apart. But is that top meant to be some kinda covered seal observation post, or just a crows nest which wasn't hollow due to plastic casting? This kinda matters for the scaling... but then, if there wasn't much standard sizing between ships, it would explain why the masts might look out of scale with the ship itself. It does look like the 'nest' is probably 6 foot tall which is pretty damn big for a crows nest.
