How big is this going to get?

I don't have access to the figures but a casual look at the number of people joining this site seams to indicate an exponential rise occurring in people joining. It took a while to hit our first 100, now at 439 I wouldn't' be completely surprised to hit 500 before Easter.

So that's my first question how long to 500?

Second bigger question, how big are we going to get both in actual numbers and regular posters? Have we seen an increase in useful or interesting posts associated with the numbers? Are people getting more Oldhammer games? Or is allowing people a dose of nostalgia the most we are doing?

Not looking for a statistical breakdown rather what is termed qualitative data, that is: your opinion.

It's been less than a year since I joined but I really feel there has been some diversity added, now there are really useful discussions for the modelling/painting aspect of the hobby, we definitely have broadened the showroom and the creation of regional groups must have had an effect on games (we even have an ongoing DnD game in the remote game section).
I can definitely see emulation here now. People coming with good ideas, new things which give other people the will to do better or more.

I like the fact that there's something for everyone, if you're only here to see painted lead, to collect, to share painting tips or to read bat reps and scenarii you will find it. We've even been able to have discussions on topics like the pygmies with without turning it into open war (which proves something was learnt from the PW case).

I've been here more or less from the start of the forum (within the first month or so) and I'd have to say I'm loving how this forum is expanding both in terms members and the varied content as people bring in there own views on the ''Oldhammer movement''

Definitely there's been growth in meaningful posts.

Especially content related to RT/2d Ed 40k.

And there's now a more steady stream of painted miniatures in Showcase/WIP.

Well I prefer to have unambiguous quantitative data before making qualitative opinions about it!

Of the current 439 users:

148 have 0 posts
54 have over 100 posts
5 have over 1000 posts

- not saying anything about the quality of their posts :) but there is an active core of what, about 70 users, that seems quite good from the handful we started with when we agreed a forum might be a good idea.

The community has managed to have a reasonably adult discussion about 'difficult' subject matter, and I'm glad we didn't end up with Pony Wars on our hands.
We're managing to not fall into the reactionary GW-bashing / rampant fanboyism that crops up with every new release on most miniatures sites, I hope that continues to provide a unique goaty flavour to this space, and we don't devolve into yet another gw forum.
Much of the painting and modelling is supurb and very inspiring.
We haven't seen much of Fathers Ted and Dougal, which is nice.

I don't really understand qualitative data, I'm a more traditional quantitative data kind of scientist so if I've grabbed the wrong end of the proverbial please pardon my ignorance. To me qualitative seams to be another word for anecdotal.

I suspected there was a core of posters rather than the 439 as listed. I'm surprised how high, 70 is quite a few posters but I suppose only 16% of the total.

In effect it is though...except a forum that would have existed in a time where forums weren't possible because the internet wasn't mainstream in its' availability. I recently found by mistake data caches online with scanned pdf's of every white dwarf through to about 125 (I know the rules, no links are being posted at all!) and the sheer versatility of content in the pre-100 white dwarf issues was staggering. I mean, Star Trek, the miniatures game was explored in some of the earliest issues, GW these days doesn't even go near that stuff. I think rather, you mean that unlike modern-edition based GW Forums, this forum is in that more unique category of a tight knit community able to have a mature discussionr egardless of age of participants and not be doom and gloom and fanatically dedicated to GW or otherwise to the exclusion of all else regardless of whether there is better product on the market or not.

I don't get any of these references. It makes that oldhammer 40+ gamers logo spring to mind (though I may be off the mark there) for reference getting and I'm just fine with it. 8-)

In short Pony Wars was a thread which exploded in some cases of outright hate and arguing which caused some members left and every mod at the time stood down.

and Father Ted is this:

Feel like what?

Like we're being watch....

Great post MS and a good reminder that some people are enjoying the ride without having to blather on...

No problem with non-participants, as that means there are more participants, on the basis of the 80-20 rule, thus more people to lighten the load of those that do. Now there's management speak for you!

So that's my first question how long to 500?
April 1st

Second bigger question, how big are we going to get both in actual numbers and regular posters?
1000 with 200 big posters by 2015

Have we seen an increase in useful or interesting posts associated with the numbers?
Yes. (Although too much rouge trader for my liking .... that's where it all started to go wrong last time.)

Are people getting more Oldhammer games?
I don't know about anyone else but I am. We have formed GROG (Gloucestershire Retro and Oldhammer Gamers). We have had 3 big games, attended two Oldhammer days at The Foundry and meet regularly once a week to enjoy old games.

Or is allowing people a dose of nostalgia the most we are doing?
You say that like it's not a big thing. Reminding folks of a happier times is the best of things.

EDIT: Also this is not the most we are doing. Through this forum I have met some fine, fine fellas, some have already become good friends ... folks I would never have met without this forum. I have a regular gaming club and have played some great games ... none of this would have happened anytime soon without this forum. I have traded with folks and picked up lots of old, hard to find minis I might not have found in a long while searching on ebay and got the chance to paint the Citadel Giant.
I guess I have made the most of the opportunities this forum has provided ... but then ... most things in life ... you get out of it what you put into it.

One person on this forum has over 2000 posts. My question is, what percentage of those posts contains a reference to goats?

6.66% not as high a % as some others on here heh

I don't know about anyone else but all this says to me is that near on 500 peeps have found a small corner of the internet where they can indulge in a minority hobby and share their work with others in a mature(ish) way with those with a common interest without getting the usual barrage of stick and abuse for doing so, for example I recently posted a W.I.P 20mm plastic undead force using troop types there are no rules for and received nothing but positive feedback. Where else would this happen?, normally it would be a rain of foul language for being off canon, plastic, wrong scale etc. Here if peeps don't like it they don't comment, if they have questions they ask them in a thoughtful and mutually helpful manor and everyone is encouraged to enjoy their hobby time in their own way!. If attitude and approach is the measure of a forum than its no wonder there are almost 500 of us using this one. A pat on the back for all using and enjoying the forum in this way and long may it continue I say.....oh and there is plentiful mention of goats....good work!. 'Rant' over

Hear hear!

Right on Mr Sprinkles.

I used to buy the odd White Dwarf in the years my stuff was in the cupboard- I'm sure many members that haven't posted are basically doing that by browsing here.

I've learnt a ton of stuff on here, from Citadel ranges and background years before my time, other manufacturers, painting tips, the power of DETTOL ( :!: ) and loads of other interesting, useful or just funny things.

Not wading through thread after thread of incessant bickering and one upmanship and coming away dejected is also extremely refreshing :o

It's an awesome community and a big up yourself to all for making it what it is.

How big can it get?
Dunno but I think there are a lot more people out there that are fond of the older stuff that might discover this place yet.
