Heroquest 25th Anniversary

The artwork is really very good, but not my cup of tea either. They're going for a mass-market rather than a retro feel, and they've raised £152474 in the first 24 hours, so it's working.

This is a Spanish company no?

Why is everything priced in Canadian dollars?
Because to use Kickstarter you need to be an American, Canadian or Uk company/person, some people are proposing their services (take a commission) so that companies not from these 3 countries could use Kickstarter, and they should have choosen a Canadian one...

Well that make sense.

I'm in several minds, it ain't old school but so long as the art isn't too graphic on the blood and guts side I'd love a newer version ton play with my boys (why I don't know as I obviously I have a few original copies).

The scenics look great but the miniatures don't have much duel use potential, not old school enough by a long way and I'm not sure I need so many heroes to merit the second tier however the first stretch goal is quite nice so the third level is quite a nice one. By 2014 my eldest will be six, that's old enough to really be into HQ isn't it? The youngest four a bit young for serious play but not impossible.

Mine are 10 and 5, and I do play that kind of games with them, 4 is ok to begin, for the youngest the idea is to keep games short (approx half an hour) but to make 2 or 3 games in an afternoon.

My eldest one began at 4 too and now is painting her own miniatures, have been reading Fighting Fantasy books for 2 years or so, and asked me recently if she could host a RPG game for her birthday next year...

Well, I went in on the big set  While I agree that it's not very old school, I also have two boys who are very rough on things, and I don't want then damaging my copy! Plus, I think it might be an easier sell on then if I'm pulling something reasonably modern out of the closet instead of Dad's musty old game.

I shouldn't be sad they've reached their goal, it looks like a lot of work's gone in. Just sad that so much of that work was poised in front of a computer screen. I won't be backing, it offends my sense of taste, but good luck to them.

I do have excuses, the main one being to alive alone with them in a house full of games and miniatures ;)

I had my first game of D&D in 2nd grade, 7 years old I think...I turned out perfectly well adjusted :?

Bloody Carrion Crawler and mouldy plates!

The minis in this 25th set sadly do absolutely nothing for me, but if it works it's magic on "the youth of today" like it did for me back then it will have done it's job.

I would not turn up my nose at the furniture, mind.

Skimming though the comments is quite horrific, the level of entitlement and vitriol spewed by the backers because the stretch-goals weren't exactly what they expected or that Gamezone didn't respond immediately to their questions, wow. Really antagonistic atuff.

While it's true the "comics" look is not what I'm after when minis are concerned, I would be very interseted to see those painted in a purely oldschool way to see what comes out. The barbarian as got to be the best candidate to cross from one range to the other.

And the Kickstarter has been temporarily suspended due to an intellectual property dispute!

I wonder if its dew to GZ only having the rights to HQ in Spain, either way i'm still not touching this Kickstarter even with Fimm's bargepole ;) heh

I suspect so. They were pretty sure they had personal distribution rights outside of Spain and I suspect Milton-Bradley might not have agreed. Their disagreement might also be spurred by the fact it was already over $250k and M-B might not have thought it would be that popular.

On the other hand, Greg "Runequest" Stafford has registered Heroquest as a TM in the States and Hasbro owns it in the UK, so sale of product from Spain to those regions is going to be a problem (!?). On the plus side for Gamezone the challenge has been issued now rather than after money has changed hands.

This was posted on LAF by FramFramson:

Hi guys,

I am trying to avoid sounding speculative or alarmist, but I feel like it's better for me to put this out there rather than say nothing and let people possibly lose a fair bit of money.

A couple of my friends were thinking of buying into this, but stopped, and pointed out several very odd and suspect things to me:

1) The combination of the license in Spain, Kickstarter in Canada is possibly an angle to avoid being liable in one jurisdiction. Not a problem in and of itself, but in combination with other things, it's problematic.

2) None of their material is actual pictures of things that are real.

3) There are only 87 backers at the tier that gets you the game and 3098 backers at the most expensive tier. That ratio seems odd, as generally speaking "just the game" is a very popular tier for any Kickstarter.

4) The company involved appears to have an established pattern of buying trademarks in Spain without having produced anything yet:

That was the other thing that came to mind after my last post. I remember being surprised when Runequest was released as Heroquest and hadn't realized the TM had lapsed. They might have secured the rights to the game from M-B but not the new owners if the name.

Per Chico's post, there is actually nothing odd about points 1, 2, and 4. And point 3 I think is explained by the fact that the highest tier gives you all the stretch goals. I think it was probably viewed as the "best value" by a lot of people.

Official statement

Please bear with us. Gamezone and Moon Design are in a meeting negotiating a settlement for both parts at this time.

Moon Design believes that their interests in the HEROQUEST brand within the USA will be infringed upon. Although we are not distributing or selling our product in US territory. As a precaution Moon Design presented a C/D on the 27th of Nov. Our talks are coming to a point where the negotiation will benefit all those involved, which finally would let us offer our product in stores in the USA sometime next year.
The Moon Design C/D was suspended, but on the table, as another element in the negotiation. Here at Gamezone it is our hopeful understand that its activation is possibly by error as both parties where coming to an agreement. Said agreement would finally end beneficially for Fans in the USA by opening the physical distribution to stores in that country. This brief pause of activity is as harmful to the interests of Moon Design as it is to Gamezone Miniatures.

We are as surprised as the Heroquest community, we didn’t expect that on Thanksgiving, of all days, to be wrapped up in this mess, that is so disagreeable for everyone involved. On a day such as this it is extremely complicated to get in touch with Moon Design. We are working diligently on a solution so we can continue with the project from where it is at the moment and reinforce it for the future.

Thank you. Dionisio
