• Welcome to the Golden Gobbo painting competition. If you'd like to read some of the ancient history you can on the Realm of Chaos 80s blog.

This competition is held some years and you'll find threads here describing how to enter and when the competition is running (typically after BOYL each year).

Other than the fame and wonderment of your peers there is often a prize kindly donated and you'll have the wonder of being awarded badges for your profile here.

GG 2026 Golden Gobbo Painting Experience 2026

This thread is part of the Golden Goblin painting competition 2026. Please see the entry thread for full details.
I have some ideas for what could be my entry this year but will have to see if I get inspiration to actually execute it.

I've got a question: Should we wait to start the thread now (with WIPS and all) so people can reply and chat about it, or wait until there's all the material, then post it in one go?
First option, WIPs and all, would be more engaging for sure.

After seeing the high skill level and quality of the paint jobs around here I'm not going to waste my time, but I do intend to get my votes in.

Eager to see what folks produce for this!

Better? I'm soon to turn 50 and have failing eyesight. My best painting days are far behind me. (Should have put more effort into my hobby 10-15 years ago.)

But I do enjoy it when I have a moment to set up the temp paint station, just don't have time to work to improve with toddlers to care for.

Thanks for the encouragement though chaps.

Ditto on the eye front! Although at least for now it's just a "reading glasses problem" so solvable to a degree for me. I know my painting is perfectly adequate, but not the best, and I could probably put lots of hours into improving (but I'd rather have fun with the family), but as with all our little challenges and so forth here it's a bit more about getting people involved more than the actual winning. Granted not many actually have prizes and Geoff does kindly donate some bits for the Gobbo, and the glory of course, never forget the glory. Still I think most people see it as an excuse to paint a single mini they might otherwise not paint. That's my thinking at least.

One of the motivations behind trying a slightly different format this year was to widen the field a bit in terms of appreciating different aspects of producing a model (hence a split vote). Granted the Golden Gobbo was and is a painting competition, but it'd be rather boring if "Lord Uberpaint" won every year so having some of the voting based on the progress thread seemed like it might be worth experimenting with - maybe you're a great storyteller and we get an awesome adventure that runs alongside the painting of the mini. Maybe it's the conversion efforts that we get to see that are otherwise somewhat lost when we just admire a nice finished model. Maybe your dedication to researching every little bit about the model is what hooks in a vote. Who knows? It's supposed to be a bit of fun so we thought we'd try mixing it up a little.

Of course granted "life" gets in the way of utopian hobby time, I've barely touched my brushes in weeks as it's full steam on Halloween prep at present in our house, but if you enjoy a bit of painting then when opportunity presents indulge. That might not be in time for this comp/challenge, but we've plenty through the year (and it's not like you have to strictly do it in that month - hell I started my October stuff back in July!). Is my painting better than when I was a youngster, yes, is it a lot better - probably not. Am I going to be as good as X, Y or Z, nah. Do I enjoy it? Yes (mostly) and that is all that really matters. I certainly enjoy watching everyone here, no matter the skill level producing stuff. So never beat yourself up over either quantity or quality of output!

This is me. The monthly challenges are pretty fun & have motivated me to paint most of the things I have painted this year. My main competition is younger me who had much better brush control than I have. Screw that guy. He didn't have the benefit of internet advice and a discretionary budget.

I'm ignoring GG26 until I get at least one greenskin painted.

You are obviously a wiser man and far more patient than I with such sage and reasonable advice.
Mayhap I'll attempt "something" then, whether a scratch-ish built Beast of Nurgle that I'd almost forgotten about, or just painting an aulde bit of lead that's long been labouring in a storage bin.
We will see.

I think that's the spirit. The scratchbuilding and kitbashing are both important parts of the game. I say do it! My eyesight is also . . . not what it was when I was in my late forties, but I figure I have instruments that can help me and I try to make up for my failings with improved skills and panache.

That's the ticket - I entered for the first time last year, mostly as a way to get me to tackle something I'd been putting off until I was 'better'. The couple of votes I got were completely unexpected and made me really happy, but the best bit was having a completed model that showed me I could do more than I thought and made me smile to look at.

I'm in the same boat with the crappy eyesight, but a 20x magnifier ring light sorts that out.

I'm going to enter my marauder giant for GG this year. Do I think I have the proverbial snowball in hell's chance of 'winning'? No. But I know I'll get a lot of interaction with the friendliest forum this side of Karaz-a-Karak, learn a few things, and hopefully end up with a completed project that's been on the wishlist since I was a kid, that'll (hopefully) bring me joy to look at once it's done, that would otherwise have sat for another few years. And let's face it, if I'm not happy with it, it can be re-stripped.

There's nothing to win as far as I'm aware, it's just really good motivation. And in terms of judging, I've certainly never seen anything but positive comments. It's like a fuzzy warm den of misfits round here. In all honesty I probably would have faded back away from painting if it wasn't for this group. I don't know many local people who do the hobby, and my friend group doesn't. Y'all keep me company in a way that I really appreciate.

Knowing how little hobby time I get, and my snail's pace at the best of times I jumped the gun and started work on my entry last month... so slightly scuppered on the WIP journey front, since it's about 70% done with no earlier photos. :?
Will have to see what I can put together. I like the idea, despite the extra effort of the thread, it should be rewardingly worth it.

Ah, that's a bummer. I can relate on your painting speed - whopping two miniatures I've finished this year...
Maybe you can make up the lack of WIP photos with some kick ass backstory for the mini?
Anyway looking forward to seeing your entry. :)
