Favourite Oldhammer Army

Mine would be Slann/Lizardmen, Because they're colourful, not many people have any original pre-slotta figures and when the dice are kind and the terrain suits their special rules - great to play a game with.

Ooh tough one, I'm 50/50 on Chaos and Undead.

Chaos because anything is possible, those RoC books are a nightmare and also my happy place. Undead because of Hammer.

Unless we're talking 40k then it's Chaos and Genestealer Cults

Woodies harking back to the 2nd edition Ravening Hordes glory days and more recently during 5th & 6th.

Why? Originally it was Blood Bath at Orc's Drift, Gary Chalk's drawings, the Jes & Aly sculpts, the superiority in scouts and skirmishers, Treemen, Wardancers and Zoats. Plus they're not High or Sea Elf splitters.

Later, we can throw Des Hanley artwork, Dryads, Elfincourt, Perilous Quest, the hail of doom arrow and so on into the mix.

That is a good question.
Back in the days I had a small smattering of Orcs, Dwarves, and Humans.
I sold the Orcs to my mate and settled on Humans.
I am not 100% sure why.
Same with WFRP, I would always be a human.

Maybe as it was easier to understand their thinking, maybe I wanted to support the underdog?
I definitely have a bias for the regular human dudes over alien races. The same in Rogue Trader, I was an Imperial Guard player.

Don’t get me wrong, Orcs are highly entertaining and have some amazing war machines to pick from.
Dwarves are stout and hard as nails and with all that armour, easier to paint, and their war machines!!!

But somehow always humans.

What's your fave army and why?
If Empire is your fave army then I change my question to 'Why play the wrong humans when Bretonnia exists?'

I think maybe some strange childhood belief that the French were the baddies compared to the very English feeling 2nd vibes I got from the Empire.
I mean the 2nd edition book of The Riding was very olde English.

I think this is possibly why I favoured The Empire, plus handgunners

I always get German vibes from the Empire, always saw Brets as English with daft names.

Yea turns out the Brets were worshipping the Elven moon goddess or some such rubbish. GW really ruined the end times, the thought of the Slann pyramids taking off into space was silly. Everyone knows pyramids are power stations not ships lol.

I'll read the 2nd ed stuff, got the pdfs on my phone but only looked at the Undead bits so far. My knowledge on fantasy started at the end of third ed, WD149 era. Anything earlier is a bit iffy, I was more concerned about absorbing 40k lore as a kid.

I only collected sci-fi miniatures from GW, so my take will be a bit different. I started out with beakies, of course, but I really quite enjoyed building an orc army, since you could be pretty random with them, they told good stories, and it felt fun whether I won or lost. I didn't have to think too much, I could just charge and call it a day. (They are, after all, orcs.) These days my favorite "army" isn't an "army" at all, but rather the random civilians and adventurers that people the world the armies are fighting to either save or destroy. (Depending.) I'm also quite liking building a fleet of spacecraft. (Well, four fleets. Might add more later.)

I enjoyed Chaos as a kid, some reason was drawn to Nurgle (probably to the the Slaves to Darkness previews in the first WDs I picked up), but was more into 40k armies.
Have been gathering more Dwarfs since finishing off the Bugman’s regiment, love the character of the sculpts. Yet to play any games with them tho!

Mine would be Slann/Lizardmen, Because their colourful, not many paople have any original pre-slotta figures and when the dice are kind and the terrain suits their special rules - great to play a game with.
