eBay Bargains, Deals, etc.

sigh... he was unreleased the second time, as in when they re-coded the line, he wasn't imported over to the new coding. so he was kinda unreleased in that second series.

I wonder if he is at foundry now.. if they seller finds a good idiot, we can make it rich ^_^
 
Thought I'd found one of my unicorns today. But the seller had 6 for sale in suspiciously bright metal for a 1980's piece, with lots of flashing, poor definition, and weird mould lines. And just about everything else that has was uncommon but they had multiples and had sold multiples of them already
 
I know I've never been quite sure about a dedicated name and shame type list - names do get mentioned in passing - a dedicated list feels a bit more defamation case pending than I'd like ... and a bit mean spirited for the site, but then again it does annoy me and I hate the thought of people paying lots for a dodgy mini. Cost plus some time and you know, well up to you and all, but it's the passing it off that really irks.
 
yeah.. It's a bit tricky. There are recasters who try to make money off people who don't know better, but sometimes, can you tell the difference from that then an idiot who brought a load cheap from some guy in the pub/market and didn't bother to look twice at them, or someone that is selling off someone else's collection and not bothering to check.. Oh, or the ones which brought them in good faith only to find they were screwed.

though with some sellers, when they are selling a bunch of the same... yeah.. that's just .. the first case. and ones that are asking insane amounts you would expect some due diligence.
 
Quite, I have less personal issue with someone up-front about it and more so if the item in question is not being actively produced by the presumed owner of the IP. Is it wrong, yep, but well consenting adults and all that. My Eldar "Armorcast" titan is a recast, I knew that when I bought it and the caster was very up-front. I don't like the model enough to attempt to hunt down an original and the recasts are as poor as the originals so you get the full build experience! However I see plenty of that titan knocking around on ebay with say just a primer layer on it and I do wonder if they (not the caster) are knowingly reselling the re-casts as originals.

I've bought some models off ebay and wondered, but it's so hard to tell I've not been too concerned since I'm not just collecting as a collection so to speak. Then I've got some that are obviously recasts and those do annoy me. I've some Ogryns that the seller must have known were recasts - they are casts of an already converted fantasy model and it's clear as day. Those were 'primed to hide' I felt.

So I don't feel I have a huge moral high ground to preach!
 
I have some KOs of old transformers which you can't buy (mostly are classes as the 'molds are lost or too damaged to be useable or worth remaking). Some brought in cheap UK shops. When they are clearly marked and priced as KO, then I have less problem with them being such. Like some third party toys. If they are honest and priced honest, it's a bit less bothered but.. some bits are a bit.. iffy.

It's kinda like, I've done some 3D model design. I wouldn't say stuff tooo fancy but nice and people liked them. But they were free. Because they were reproduction aparts. Not perfect, but If I was missing a part of an old toy which the prices for some of these parts are.. insane, then I took some photos and recreate it well enough so the figure looks good (a good example is Transformers: Head Masters. if you lose the head, which is removeable, you are stuck with a robot with no head. This in fact lead to a 2008-ish toy being made where there is a small spring loaded head so if you lost the main transforming head, you atleast had A head). one thing that annoyed the hell out of me was people that did that, or just 3D scanned the real ones and THEN SOLD the STLS. For me, that just crossed the line with some of these bits. You can get away with selling prints as 'price of printing, materials etc, but my view was I didn't create anything. I tried to recreate something which was designed by someone else. Sure it took a fair bit of work to do, but still.

without getting into some legal bits, It's like If you have one shield of a certain design, and you need a bunch of them, so you make a quick and dirty mould to make your own copies of them. I think that is one thing, but to do that and then open up a eBay or more likely Etsy store selling your shield copies... ugh.. Though not against making up some for a friend, who made cover time it has taken (not that it'll be much).

But yeah, I think the huge problem are ones who openly bootleg and try to claim they are innocent nice people just helping people with these models which are out of print and no-one can buy so they are clearly not in copyright etc. Did you know that was ONE (there were a few) reasons that the 60s Batman show wasn't on DVD for a long time? eBay had solds of copies where the guy claimed 'it's public domain cause you can't buy it' and eBay would do nothing cause he claimed it was public domain even though it was clear it wasn't. But things can get very messy.
