Cheetors Space Orks: Brainboyz 30/12/14

EDIT: this thread started as a place to record the development of my ork pirates. Rather than clog up the forum with new threads for my other ork units I have decided to rename this thread and to post future ork units here.

I am involved in a Space Pirate game at BOYL with Whiskey Priest. WP has put together a beautiful table to play on that compliments his pirate crew extremely well, so he is a hard act to follow. I am reasonably happy with how this first batch of his human pirates opponents has come out though, so I am certain that our game will look pretty cool :)

The first of the Skallywags up is Mr Killgore (Quartermaster) and the first unit of Swabz.

Two plasma weapons in this squad makes it pretty heavy. Killgore has some sort of kustom weapon built into his armour too. I dont know what it represents, but its cool looking, which is more important :)

The blog post is HERE, with some more photos and waffle about green space pirate topics.

Plenty more Skallywags in the pipeline. I will post them here as I get them finished.

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Ork Freebooter Pirates

Those look great, great paintscheme, a couple of nice bright colours that really work together and those stripey pants are fantastic, and I love the way you paint that green skin

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Ork Freebooter Pirates

beautiful

Any chance you can help us paint red like that?

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Ork Freebooter Pirates

Top painting Cheetor, I love the way you paint Orky skin.
Even the humble Space Ork Raider with cap looks outstanding.

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Ork Freebooter Pirates

I do love, love, love these Orks so much. What an inspiring, outstanding work! The colours, the scheme, everything. Makes me want a Freeboterz Waaagh!

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Ork Freebooter Pirates

Thanks for all the feedback folks.

Its roughly applied GW Mechrite red over black, followed by a heavy wash of Army Painter Dark Tone (Badab Black equivalent. The entire model gets that wash) followed by some layering of Mephiston red and lastly some Model Colour Flat Red highlights. Highlighting red is tricky as it tends to end up orange or pink, so in order to get some contrast I tend to bring it from black up to pure bright red. GW Mephiston Red is the best red paint that I have ever used. I strongly recommend picking up some of that if you want to work on your reds over black.

Thanks CVB. It took me a while to find a skin technique that I was happy with. This way of painting ork skin is faster on the modern orks as they have much sharper and deeper detail. It looks a bit nicer on the old models actually, but thats because I have to spend a lot longer getting it right on the smoother, more rounded details.

Even the humble Space Ork Raider with cap looks outstanding.

Its important to note that I got the coolest model in that image - the cybork - in a trade with you CVB. Without his ridiculous level of space pirateyness the project concept wouldnt hold together, so thanks again :)

Thanks Suber. The palette used is identical to that used on the rest of my orks, but where it is applied to the uniforms in this case is a bit different. This way the whole force looks coherent and I can happily use squads or dreads or support weapons or whatever with the regular boyz or the pirate boyz without it looking weird.

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Ork Freebooter Pirates

I'm so pleased to see that Cybork Freebooter go from a fate worse than death as a never to be painted double to travel back across the globe, be lovingly painted and be given an identity :)

I actually finished the Squat musician last night, as it happens!

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Ork Freebooter Pirates

Wonderful, wonderful painting. They manage to be simultaneously bright and eye catching, as well as grim and gritty! I think it's the fantastic contrast you manage to get with the highlights that really makes them pop.

The stripes are the best bit though - a very elegant addition which just reinforces their piratical nature without resorting to too much in the way of cliche. Although the boss gets away with his cliches just because the model is so cool ;)

Hooray! Now the circle is complete. Anything is better than having the little guys sitting in a box when they could be getting painted, even if they have to make the trip to the other side of the world before it happens.

Thanks axiom, Im glad that you like it. I tend to push almost every colour that I paint from black to almost white (or very pale at least). It does make the finished job quite cartoony, but that appeals to me really. Im trying to facilitate absurdly over the top stories and heroics with vibrant colours, not prepare an accurate museum display. If the contrast cant be seen from three feet away then its probably not worth painting.

Miniatures as goofy and fun as these demand a certain approach anyway. Its possible to paint these models in subtle and realistic ways, but frankly Im more interested in getting the little guys as vivid as I can without taking so long that I get nothing else painted.

I wasnt very keen on Freebooter pirates when they came out. Teenage cheetor thought that the cliche was a push too far, that tricorne/bicorne hats and Jolly Rogers and the like were too much. I have changed since though, now I embrace the inherently absurd nature of space pirates with 17th century Earth trappings. Life is short and I will try to get a few giggles where I can. There is a time and place for taking my toy soldiers seriously. Ork freebooter pirates is not that place ;)

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: More Swabz 07/07/13

The next batch of Skallywags are ready to dance the hornpipe and swab the poopdeck at BOYL.

And a shot of all twelve painted to date (pushing the envelope of my meagre miniature photography skills it must be said):

The blog post is HERE.

I have some gretchin, some objective counters and some characters to get working on next. Im enjoying working on these guys, so much so that I am sniffing around for RT era orks with prominent close combat weapons. If you have some gathering dust somewhere and you want to sell or trade them the PM me please :)

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: More Swabz 07/07/13

The new additions are great, really love the guy on the left, but they're all fantastic, really great unit.

Thanks Mr Tough Guy. The leftmost guy is a Marauder ork miniature. I would like to get the other five or six of those at some stage as I enjoyed painting that guy.

Meanwhile I finished Kaptin Fiddy Teef and the ships cat-squig/gyrinx last night.

skallywags12.jpg

These guys will be leading my pirates in search of booty in Ferrograd at BOYL in a month or so. Me hearties.

And the updated group shot.

Gretchin next.

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Kaptin Fiddy Teef 09/07/13

That's a beautiful crew. The captain is one of my favorite space ork freebooterz, and the gyrinx is inspired.

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Kaptin Fiddy Teef 09/07/13

Those are fantastic. Can't wait to see what you do with the Gretchin.

Thanks Con-fusion.

I enjoy painting little familiar models and space cats in particular so I have ended up shoehorning gyrinx into a number of projects over the years.

The colour of this one decided by two things: 1) I didnt want to add a new colour to the scheme and 2) the greenness of the little squighound on the cover of the oldest Olrk Codex has long appealed.

The Kaptin is one of the best old Ork miniatures of all, Freebooter or not. Its fantastically absurd :)

Thanks bulldoglopez. I enjoy painting goblins more than orks (and I quite enjoy painting orks). The plan for the gretchin is to have them continue the theme, so we will see how that goes. I should have a few ready within the next week or so I hope.

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Kaptin Fiddy Teef 09/07/13

They're marvellous, cheetor 8-) I look forward to seeing them in the lead in August.

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Kaptin Fiddy Teef 09/07/13

So, so pretty.I just love the depth of the red and all the little glinting bits! :)

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Kaptin Fiddy Teef 09/07/13

Fantastic stuff! This is going to be a great game. We're going to spend more time taking photo's of the prettyness than actually playing. Great looking crew.
