Superb Freebooters ! Red/Green/Yellow/Black colors are a good choice.
The result is fantastic.
Bravo !! 8-)

They're marvellous, cheetor 8-) I look forward to seeing them in the lead in August.

Thanks Mister Rab. There wont be any shortage of cool things to look at at BOYL I suspect :)

So, so pretty.I just love the depth of the red and all the little glinting bits! :)

Red is tough to get right. I am reasonably happy with the results that I am getting these days, but it took a while to get there. Red breaks a lot of the painting rules. Im glad that you like it.

Fantastic stuff! This is going to be a great game. We're going to spend more time taking photo's of the prettyness than actually playing. Great looking crew.

I think that these guys should look quite well alongside your your pirates in Ferrograd. You and I appear to have similar interest in the slightly brighter, gaudier, Mega City 1 sort of palettes in the 41st Millennium. Without painting my guys to match yours in any deliberate way, I still reckon that they will tie in with your models and scenery nicely. Im really looking forward to it :)

Thanks Nico. The Freebooters do have a large number of colours in their palette, but they get away with it for reasons that I am not 100% sure of myself. More research required.

Thanks for the feedback :)

I love how your stuff just oozes character Cheetor, and how you really do your own thing and do it well.
The Freebooter Kaptin is an absolute star.
I know I said it last time, but again, your Ork skin is wonderful.

Thanks CVB. I have been called "contrary" on more than one occasion if thats what you mean ;)

Its a great model. My joint favourite of the old Freebooter models. This guy and the cybork are the pick of the bunch.

Thanks. Not everyone likes it but I far prefer the gnarled, vaguely Paul Bonner pencil illustration look that it reminds me off. It reminds me of certain green house plants too which fits with how I imagine ork skin to look. Lastly, the quite extreme highlighting is visible on the tabletop from a couple of feet away, which is important. Its not really worthwhile painting it if it cant be seen on the gaming table.

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Goblinaid Grots 17/07/13

The latest addition is these guys, my first pirate gretchin contingent.

skallywags20.jpg

These guys have a sub-mission in the space pirate 40k scenario that I am playing with Whiskey Priest at BOYL. The Pilot probably wont feature in that game, but I wanted to paint it now anyway.

Four of the figures are Goblinaid miniatures and the other two are Hasslefree. One of the masters of the Goblinaid models was picked up by Hasslefree after Goblinaid was over, so that one is a Hasslefree model now too.

I did some weapon swaps and added little discs of plastic rod to the weapons that I (too) quickly painted like lights, to make them look a bit more sci-fi. Its a lazy nod to the figures ostensibly science fiction nature :)

The blog post with more info and images is here.

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Goblinaid Grots 17/07/13

Love the little fellas - they fit right in. Who'd have though pirate goblins was even a miniatures genre? The chap with folded arms just oozes character.

Great stuff!

EDIT: just remembered Black Scorpion do some orc and goblin pirates - seen them?

Thanks axiom.

A sub genre further divided by adding "space" in front of everything

It may be my favourite model from this project so far, which considering how much fun these guys are, is saying something.

The BS stuff is tempting alright. They look a little dapper for me though. I want to have some more barefoot, scarf-on-head types, rather than more guys with jackets and bicornes.

I do have a few of the Maxmini goblin pirate headsto add to some of the current plastic grots - a kit that I really like. I want to add a few scruffier goblins next, but I have a couple of other things to do first.

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Goblinaid Grots 17/07/13

They look great Paul, can't wait to kill them all some day :)

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Goblinaid Grots 17/07/13

These are all so characterful !

I'm having remnants of Warcraft 2 voices in my ears just by looking at them ! "Who wants to sing? Dabu Daaaaabu "

I love your work on the greenskins because it gives them back that varied and silly (the good silly not the other one) look which suits them so well. With that vibe you could practically make any ork concept look good (communist orks, cowboy orks, ...)

The idea of adding leds to otherwise regular pirate weapons is absolutely great and clever. Simple, easy, elegant an damn good looking. Juts the kinf of cost effective idea I'd like to have sometimes !

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Goblinaid Grots 17/07/13

These are lovely. great skin and I love how you turned regular orks into freebooters with just a paint job. Who needs a bicorne to be a pirate when you have stripy yellow trousers.

If you want bare foot orcs then these may do you:

The basic foundry orcs could work as pirate orks too.

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Goblinaid Grots 17/07/13

Oh, so lovely! Great additions indeed, they fit perfectly!

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Goblinaid Grots 17/07/13

Thanks for the kind words everyone :)

Just John: you might get to kill them today in fact...

Asslessman: even with average life expectancy I don't have time to prep miniatures and terrain for all the genres that I want to game in. So things like space pirate goblins help to get the most bang for my buck.

Erny: the RT Boyz are fun and uniquely varied sculpts, so a bit of a Disney filter on the outfits and they become quite acceptable space pirates to me. I'm glad that you like them.

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Big Billy & Crackers 07/08/13

First of all: this work on the Pirates is awesome, I never commented since the beginning and want to say they look spectacular.
The treatment of the light is great for each color.

Maybe I misunderstood but you did not mention what was the last big guy you included, I mean which range/brand is he?

Re: Skabsquigs Skallywags: Big Billy & Crackers 07/08/13

Thanks for the kind words folks. The Skallywags had a lot of fun a-pillagin' and a-fightin' at BOYL last weekend.

I put the information about the parts of the "Billy" model in the blog post that I linked to :)
Its a Mantic "Hulk" from their Deadzone Marauders (orks) range. The head has been replaced with a cyber pirate head from Kromlech and the parrot was clipped off a model from Ramshackle games.

I have decided to record all of my space orks in this thread from now on rather than clog the forum up further with individual threads for the various oddball units. I have renamed the thread appropriately.

My Goff Rockerz "Mushrööm Klöwd" are in their own thread, just because it seems appropriate.

Todays update is a couple of little guys that have been sitting on the painting table since the summer. 15mm scientist models with the addition of Gnoblar heads and lenses over their eyes makes pretty passable Brainboyz I think.

brainboyz1.jpg

Im sure that most of the people reading this know what the Brainboyz are, but if not then there is a short synopsis in the blog post for these models.

brainboyz3.jpg

The idea of having these little guys command a force of orks via phermone control or something quite appeals. All going well I might play a game using them like that in ten days or so.

I always like your take on sci-fi greenskins of various types, and these are no different. Very successful conversion. The out-sized head looks great.

And I'm glad you post them here too as well as your blog. I'm always more apt to notice/comment on things on the forum for some reason.
