WFB4 Chaos army building & rules questions.

Warhammer Fantasy Battle 4th Edition
This month (and since 1994) I finally got 2 (expensive) Beasts of nurgle, already stripped of paint and ready for building. As it's too hot to paint here, I took a glance to the rules in the Warhammer Armies: Chaos book (I already remember the profile and so on) but it just struck me: Are the beasts supposed to fight in five model units? It's not a monster, there's nothing in the book (as far as I've been able to find) that says there's an exception to the 5 model rule.

Back in the day I never used the book rules because the only players in my area cheated so hard they didn't trust me and my book (I was the only one able to read English at the time and they assumed I'd cheat like them) so I don't remember. Also, I never saw beasts of nurgle in a game because they were rare, expensive, and not too good compared to charging cavalry or a Bloodthirster.

Also, I never saw a FAQ or rules clarification article about 4th edition Chaos armies, so maybe there's one and someone can point me to that info.

I always assumed they worked like a kind of Nurgle-themed Chaos Spawn...

huh.. just checked.. that is a bit odd.. except where noted, each regiment must consist of at least five models in total.

At least would say that is the smallest number, but the 'in total' would say maximum.. I'm pretty bloody sure what it MEANS is the minimum number in a regiment is 5. It is not a maximum.

that said, right.. the question was Beasts like the Nurgle plague beasts... Now, the 5 minimum applies to regiments. Chaos Dæmons are a different section. It states that:
you need to have atleast one Chaos Sorcerer of that god to allow Dæmons of that god. no problem. Greater Dæmons like the Bloodthirsters are independent large monsters and do NOT form units. All others are lesser dæmons really, so need to be atleast five.

as plague beats of Nurgle are small lesser ones, you both need atleast one Champion or Sorcerer of Nurgle to include units, and a unit has to be atleast 5. Points wise they are only 75pts each. the Fact the models go for stupid amounts on the second hand market is.. one of these things, so third-party ones are much better ^_^

375 points for a 5 beasts unit, dealing 5d6 attacks... I suppose that makes sense but also explains why no one played them when I was a teen.

I've seen people deploying the new plastic models in units of 3-4 in The Old World and that's the biggest unit I've ever seen...

Try playing third - you need seven or multiples of seven per unit! :) I've managed to get six together so far (four painted), I suppose I have seven if I count my new (plastic) one as well. At least UK wise with extreme patience I've found you can get them for about £30-40 each, but you do have to wait for the "auction" auctions. I missed out on a few a couple of months ago alas.

Anyhow I know you'll do the beasts proud even if you don't field yours as a full unit for a while. Looking forward to seeing your paint job on those you have.

Even if you can't (and I didn't have the 4th Chaos army book) field them at present as Beasts can you proxy them as Spawn instead?

I'd like to play 3rd but I've never met someone here who played it back then; on the contrary, me and some of my friends can play 4th from memory (as AD&D or MTG). I'm no against reading "new" rulebooks anyway.

As you said, yes, I'll be using at least one as a counts-as-a-Spawn.

Know you may be wedded to original casts, but our chap @Lecter1972 has a couple of great plague beasties in his catalogue https://l72smetalminiaturesmusings.wordpress.com/tag/plague-beast/ 😉
Wait a minute! I love that model!
WAIT ANOTHER MINUTE
WHAT AN AMAZING CATALOG.
Ok, deep breaths. Calm down. @Lecter1972 I assume you're shipping those from the UK. I've been "murdered" by customs lately, but my friend is traveling to Bristol in a couple of months... Maybe we can arrange it so the models are sent to his place to avoid extra costs... (I'm sorry if I'm being too direct but those beasts are so good...).
