GG 2026 A Waaagh (or Oink?) for Golden Gobbo

This thread is part of the Golden Goblin painting competition 2026. Please see the entry thread for full details.
What's your technique/colour recipe for the wood? I struggle a bit to get wood looking good and not to uniform/monotone. I've got a lot coming up in my near future (giant tree trunk, goblobber and pump wagons to name a few!)

I started to use this recipe some 2 or 3 orcs ago: on a beige ( bleached bone or similar) base i add a glaze of a yellowish brown (nazdreg yellow - contrast - in this case), then redo thin beige lines, reglaze, repeat at will to enrich the wood grain, add very light green spots/lines, then finish up with scorched brown or snakebite leather ( the contrast one - a jack of all trades to me) glazes all over, with some black on the edges. In case of things made up of more wooden parts I'd try to create variety using different beiges or greys for the grain and different browns/reds/greens as glazes

Thanks, that's really helpful! I think I've got similar colours and inks. I've never added my own lines before, will definitely be giving it a go. Was trying to think how to stop big bits of wood being just "brown", and this looks like the key

Wood is basically like leather or metal: the more colours you throw at it, the more real it will look. I forgot to mention that on the back of the shield I used pink for the grain, too...almost everything will do.

Tomorrow I will add some weathering to the sides of the original helmet and will begin working on the d*ck-face

What a plan😅
