A blast from the past

Here are these chaps all finished:

One or two of my favorites a bit closer up:

and here is a WIP shot to shop the matching shields:

How to train a dragon:

img9069d.jpg

img9065sp.jpg

These guys are really small and a real fiddle to paint compared to todays 'heroic scale' minis.

These are the mounted versions of the fantasy adventurers I have already painted. Specifically this is FAC 29 Mounted Dwarf champion and FAC 14 Mounted Elven Hero with Sword. (although I am not sure this is his original /correct horse.

img8897t.jpg

First guy finished ... or at least I though he was I spotted whilst messing with the photos that I forgot his gold bracelet. Grrrr.

img9155mn.jpg

img9154d.jpg

... and here are the mounted and foot versions together:

This little lady is up next.

She is FA19-2 Female Fighter with Sword (Spring 1982)

img9146t.jpg

Here she is done.

img9228o.jpg

This is FF47-2 Merchant with Dagger Feb 1982

... and he is a great little mini.

img9147d.jpg

I can't help thinking I should have done the cape a different colour to the main robe ...
I don't know much about medieval clothing

I have reached a bit of a watershed in my Citadel history ....

Blue ‘Dragon’Catalogue

Early in 1983 came the Little blue Catalogue with the BIG (Chicken) Dragon on the front.
With this Catalogue Citadel revised their famous ‘C series’ codes of numbering started. It evolved a little with the odd code changing time but the C-series remained as the system for identifying Citadel miniatures for many years.

Whilst this was a reorganisation of existing miniatures under the new codes it also seemed to herald an explosion of new miniatures as they set about producing miniatures for each of the codes and applied the fantasy tribe concept of individualised figures to the entire range.

In the words of Brian Ansell from the introduction to this catalogue:

“Welcome to the new citadel range!
This catalogue represents a major turning point in citadels history!
Most of you will be familiar with our fantasy tribes concept of individualised models, we are now applying that concept to the entire range.

We have recoded our range into groups of the same type of figure and will be working through the codes individualising existing models and adding completely new individualised figures as we go.

For instance C01: Fighters lists 20 models. In fact we have made at least six variations of costume, head shield weapon or equipment for each of these models ; just like we did with our fantasy tribe range.

My next mini is a good example of this:

This guy is : FA10-1 Paladin with Sword.

466pxfaimage19.jpg

He got given a new code under the C01 Fighting men code.

Specifically C01/2a

C01/1 Fighting men
C01/2 Paladins & Goodly Knights of law
C01/3 Female Fighters and Amazons
C02/4 Warriors of Chaos

My guy, C01/2a was ...

a) Paladin in Full plate with sword.

However the guy I am going to paint does not have a sword.
My guy is this guy but with a weapon change. His sword has been swapped for a Mace ... but as you can see he is identical to the original mini in every other way:

img5978r.jpg

So .... all crystal clear then?

Less explanation ... more painting.

So here he is done:

img9297v.jpg

Next up is this guy:
FAC10 Mounted Paladin with Sword
The mounted version of the last guy I painted.

img9107a.jpg

img9258t.jpg

and here they are together:

img9265ha.jpg

... and with his mates:

img9310.jpg

This guy is up next ...He is another C01 fighting man.
He is a variation again from the original FA9-2 Barbarian with Two-Handed Sword (mid 1982) Fantasy Adventurer . That original guy had a silly hair do so he was much improved by the helmet .... and a really cool shield.

img9340.jpg

img9395m.jpg

img9414y.jpg

img9418.jpg

Starting to look like a good size party to kick some:

img9384nj.jpg

This is my next guy.
He is the mounted version of my last guy.

He is FAC9 Mounted Barbarian with Two-Handed Sword

img9117s.jpg

img9145j.jpg

img9365.jpg

img9369.jpg

img9368u.jpg

img9367k.jpg

and with his mates:

img9380cg.jpg

img9405s.jpg

I have a couple more Fantasy adventurers from the FA series I have found.

I found this guy in a box of stuff labelled Nippon.
Some fun stuff in there to paint sometime soon. LD

But there was this guy: He is an FA12-2 Ninja (Assassin) with Sword (Spring 1982)

img9335r.jpg

Ninja guy finished:

img9453q.jpg

Then I picked up this guy on ebay:
The original FA10-2 Paladin with sword. (Spring 1982) I couldn't resist him even though he is a varient of the guy I have already painted.

img9447z.jpg

img9489c.jpg

and here he is with his twin brother:

img9488g.jpg

Here are a bunch of Knight types from my collection:

One of my favorite 'adventurers' mini's of all time.

He was just another CO1 Paladin. He appears in the First citadel Compendium (1983)

img9438p.jpg

img9440m.jpg

I fancied something a bit different from the red ... I think it was a mistake. Not very happy with him.
He doesn't sit well next to the others ... the blue is a bit bright next to all the muted tones.

img9493g.jpg

img9494t.jpg

Whilst I was about it I painted these two guys as well.
I confess I have no idea what manufacturer they are from ... they were bought a long time ago.

img9492q.jpg

img9497d.jpg

He is from the NEW warrior knights of Law speciality set that appeared in the 1st citadel compendium

His name was Sir Lanceor de Leal and whilst a bit 'romanesque' he was IMO the best sculpt in the set.

img9441g.jpg

This guy is Agravaan the fighter from the Adventurers starter set from 1983

img9333w.jpg

C28 multi part Giant

img9093.jpg

img9091y.jpg

They appeared in the First Citadel compendium (1983)

citcomp103302.jpg

img9131r.jpg

img0196ny.jpg

img0197vv.jpg

and some other giants:

I think this one was a mountain Giant from Grenadier:

img9241v.jpg

and this guy ... I think he is a Storm Giant and he is either from Ral Partha OR Grenadier:

img9233c.jpg

I am informed on my other thread he is a Storm Giant sculpted by William Watt for Grenadier

img9236h.jpg

img0022wa.jpg

and the other guy is just about finished:

img0013yx.jpg

img0017pe.jpg

Tried to do the base so it looked like the whirlwind was sucking up some of the sand/dirt from the ground:
(Just needs grass to finish it off.)

img0011ho.jpg

Here is a group shot of three of the vintage guys:

img0188m.jpg

Small update. Random Dwarf.

Picked this guy up recently. One I have been after for a while.
I just added the finishing touches to this guy to make him match my stuff.

He is a C06 Dwarf adventurer.
He first appeared in the first Citadel compendium.
You can see him on this page second row up second in from the left.

citcomp102601.jpg

You wouldn't pick him out as a classic from this scrappy line drawing but he is an absolute classic. Great sculpt.

img9216q.jpg

Another random Dwarf ... Not quite as old?

(Just spotted I forgot to paint the eyes. opps!)

072shi.jpg

073qw.jpg

Some more undead stuff:

They are not as old as most of the stuff on the thread but ...
.... they are old enough to be considered 'a blast from the past'.

I love this guy.
He was in the red Catalogue as 'Vampire 1' amongst the Ethereals on page 311
I never liked him in the catalogue
But I picked him up by accident in a mixed lot of stuff and painted him up ....
... and I love him.

img0132qc.jpg

img0133yk.jpg

img0134wy.jpg

Next up is the female Vampire form the same page ...

img0129de.jpg

Then there is this guy again from the same page....

Absolute classic!

img0126df.jpg

Great face:

img0127ao.jpg

So I have got a Nechrach, Lahmian and Von C ...
... I just needed a Blood Dragon Vampire to complete my set.

Now Blood Dragons didn't exist back then .... but then I came across this guy.

He was a variant of one of the early C35 Chaos Warriors.

But he looks just like a Blood Dragon.

img0136yk.jpg

Just need to find him a shield ....

img0137ed.jpg

These are pre-slotta C14 "Lesser Night Goblins".
They are rare as hell, a b@gger to find on e-bay and I really want a couple more if anyone has some.

Base edges need some work.

img0620bx.jpg

img0626fe.jpg

img0630m.jpg

img0632qn.jpg

Here is a little conversion I did for a standard bearer:

img0635a.jpg

Here they are as a ranked up unit.

img0638vk.jpg

... and small skirmishing unit of archers:

img0640e.jpg

They are tiny .... snotling sized

Here is one next to a snotling ...

img0641yh.jpg

I am after some more of these if anyone has a few?

So here are some more old minis.

They are C22 creatures. first released in June 1984

A war dog:

img0804mj.jpg

Some Chaos Hounds:

img0807ee.jpg

img0809vn.jpg

and all together:

img0810by.jpg

And a Lion. (Although now I see these pictures i can see I need to go tone down that last highlight. :o)

img0812gc.jpg

img0815a.jpg

OK That brings me right up to date. That is everything I have completed so far from my pre slotta stuff.
I have at least as much already stripped and lined up for a new paint job.
However this is my back burner project so don't expect regular updates from now on.

I hope you have enjoyed my old stuff.

If anyone can help me out with the FTD3 Dwarves .... or a few more Lesser Night Goblins ... that would be great.

Brilliant stuff :) love the paint jobs that have turned miniatures I have barely given a second glance at into something I actually want to have a go at painting myself now.

This stuff isn't even old anymore, this is ancient hammer. I really like the paintjob and the miniatures, so full of character. Now I have to update my daily e-bay search filters to pre-slotta!

AHH! Fantastic to see the 'Blast from the Past' thread here on the Oldhammer Forums - where it really belongs. I'm looking forwards to seeing more of your collection.

Thanks fellas.
This does seem like the right place to post this stuff.

Not everything I paint is quite this old.
I will get some more stuff posted up soon.
