To darken the crater center even more and represent some black soot of the recent explosion (even if that isn't overly realistic, but, hey, this is SiFi), I brushed on some black pigments.
When I stacked a second floor onto the rock spires to store the parched ground on top of them, there was still some room in the box. So I added some spacers onto the parched ground MDF board.
That way, the craters also still fit into that box.
Anybody remember the easy, simple, stylized hills from White Dwarf articles back then? Every set of tabletop terrain needs hills. Nothing fancy, just some sheets of styrofoam. To begin, I drew the shapes of the hills on three A3 sized sheets of ePVC, planning to use an A3 sized box for the storage.
Using the bases as a template, I drew their shape onto sheets of 2cm styrofoam. I like this height per level for the 90's stylized type of hills. I then dotted an inner line about a centimeter in, to use as a cutting guide, to get me some space between the hill and the edge of he base.
For the two table edge hills, I cut a back-wall also from 3mm ePVC and glued it in a 90° angle to the back of the hills after cutting the contour of the hill into it.
Impressive scenics which capture the 90's feel well, but the storage solutions and the pre planning really is inspiring. I've always avoided scenics because of the problems of storage and your approach really has made me reconsider.
