2nd or 3rd

It's amazing really how we can have so many regional accents in such a small country!
Its complicated innit?! My 'posh up north' wife has real difficulties dain sarf. For instance, in Bishops Waltham once (in my home county of Hants! Enemy territory for her) she quite innocently and disarmingly stopped a passerby (ver ver posh lady) to ask:"Hiya, there SPAAA rond 'ere?' Confused posh lady: 'Sorry? A hotel?'. 'No, Shop?' Now very confused posh lady trying to catch her drift:"Err. There is a Budgens? For Groceries", 'Boodjens?' "No, Budgens." BOODJENS? " 'No, sorry, you miss heard me, Budgens'.... ad infinitum. It went on for several minutes until they disengaged accents, personal slights and perceived class stratification. Wars have been started for less😂

I'm contractually obliged to mention the Mordheim option. All the rules and supplements are available, free of charge, as pdfs from the Broheim website. If you fancy narrative skirmish gaming rather than fannying around with ranks & flanks, it's a good way to go. If nothing else, you could use it to get some games in while you paint your armies.
Plus one for Mordheim for all the above reasons. Still popular with younger gamers and doesn't suffer from edition supplanting...

Don't get hung up on the name as you don't need to just use Mordheim as intended. It's WFB 5th edition skirmish and you can use the engine for all sorts. Fans have been messing around with it since it was released in 1999 introducing new settings and warbands.

We've tweaked and hacked it about for all sorts of things e.g. Realm of Chaos warbands (RoCbands🤘), Terror of the Lichemaster style mini campaign, Heroquest type games (Mordheimquest), a jabberwock hunt one shot etc. Some of these used Oldhammer figures (Oldheim).

It may have been mentioned already, but the best thing about 3rd is Warhammer armies. I dread to think how long I have spent just flicking through that as a kid and adult. Ravening hordes for second is definitely more chaotic. As kids, we ran the second editon scenarios (which are the best) with third rules. I think there was only one 3rd edition scenario (aside from the one in the book) which was in white dwarf and required 4 million figures. Which is an accusation you could definitely level at the magnificent sven starter scenario too!

Y'know, some would say that was the beginning of the end. Balanced, restrictive lists that paved the way for the competetive dynamics of 4th onwards at a cost to the narratives of 1st and 2nd.
I will die on my shield about Warhammer armies being amazing but I get it. I like to think there is a world where you can have lists for casual games and imaginative scenarios (which do take time). Armies was really only a framework taken from the rulebook with the emphasis (in my head) still being the world and some consistent rules for structure. But yes, 4th really did become about army books with exceptions to the rules. Ravening hordes (albeit i only read it after 3rd was out) never felt like it crossed a line as it was as much bestiary as army book and clearly not balanced at all!

Same. To me the lists in Warhammer Armies added some racial flavour to let you know what sort of troops the standing armies would use.

The illustrations inspired me rather than constrained me, they added fuel and direction to the oft meandering imaginings I had.

I still prefer to think of the world as what was described in WFRP first edition.
As the elves said, One Book To Rule Them all and in The Artwork Bind Them.

The Paul Bonner unit illustrations in Warhammer Armies were so charming! Understand they were a slog for him and minic models, but remain very characterful. 😃
The iconic photos of the armies were also very inspirational! (Intentionally so!)
