📖 What are people reading?

I watch a lot of Hammer Horror and other less gory jump scare horror and I always wondered how the originals of Dracula and Frankenstein compare to the film versions.
The Hammer versions of Frankenstein portray Victor as not very nice to downright nasty and Dracula always as Christopher Lee.

I figured I owed it to myself to read the source material to better understand what the film makers were going for.

(I 'rage quit' the new Frankenstein film last night :P )

I've found very few of the films really match up with Stoker closely. Certainly none that I've seen. There's a Spanish language version of the classic Lugosi Dracula shot on the same set at night with different actors. Suppsedly that one is the closest.

^To be fair, I have not seen that one. I've seen the silent Nosferatu, portions of the Lugosi (though never the whole thing), the 90s Dracula with the red plastic armor and the John Lenin glasses . . .

both aren't based on the novel. they are based on the stage play.

I take it you have heard about them finding a decent copy of the original ending of the Lugosi one which is being restored (they have shown a preview). nothing story wise but it was known to have been censored in the late 1930s and lost for a long time. So it's of interest

When that came it I loved it, when I watched it earlier this year, not so much.
Fair. It rubbed me the wrong way from day one, but I've been a crabby old man since I was a relatively young child. All that said, there's nothing inherently wrong with Hollywood spectacle, per se, it's just not my thing. I have a sick fondness for movies most people find boring because they're longer, or start slower, or what have you, so my taste is probably a poor guide.

I had not heard that! I think one of the reasons the Spanish Language version is supposed to be better is that it wasn't censored so heavily. I shall look forward to it.

Can’t actually recall if I have actually watched the whole film… 🤨
I think some of the imagery from it are likely more influential than the execution! 🤔

while I don't 100% agree with all there views (which makes sense ^_^) a good friend of mine and her partner run a Horror Movie review site:

They have probably covered it. I normally recommend them to either small time British horror films, very weird ones or ones which are things like Comedy Horror. They have covered a few I suggested like The Uncanny (1977) and Dr. Caligari (1989)
