Half Orc? Half Goblinoid?

Any earlier reference?
Rick Priestly was interviewed in the Awesome Lies blog (2nd part?) and it's 'complicated'. Guess never developed as the other races, but Halflings we're still kept as one of the Tolkiens big four and as Citadel manufacturing minis for DnD as well. In with WHFB 1e. Miniatures sells were never great apparently. Even with Lumpin Crooks RoR. They were kept for WFRP1 but as Herbalist, cooks etc (Phil Gallagher wrote them into the Empire background in enemy withIn), as we know, and in WHFB2e Ravening Hordes as allies of the Empire and Dwarfs. Apparently there is a Halfling goddess called 'Esmerelda'. Rick Priestly named her after his bike, when writing drafts with Richard Halliwell...(!) Not a lot on background other than made up fan stuff? WHFB 1e stats below...

Oh, Esmerelda is quite a nice goddess. The Goddess of Hearth and Home and said to have given them the gift of cookery. There are other gods and goddess for halflings but I don't know much on them.

Yup. Just as Tolkiens Hobbits could resist the lure of the one ring, GWs Halflings are good at resisting all magic. High WP innit.
Aha, that makes sense then. I wasn't quite translating between chaos and Tolkien's darker forces, though the resemblance is clear enough now that you mention it. And yes, the Hobbits inherent . . . niceness? . . . simplicity? . . . charitability might work in this case, Tolkien being Tolkien. Anyway, they were clearly resistant to the darker arts, though not impervious to it, obviously. I was reading "repellant" more like mosquito repellant: a thing which drives away another thing. So somehow chaos would have to find halflings so utterly disturbing they have to run away in fear for their dark lives. (I'm picturing Bilbo washing dishes and Sam tending the garden to drive away chaos here.)

Atleast his take of on the Halflings being druggies wasn't as bad as his dwarfs... which is.. erm.. controversial at best.

^You mean the smoking and the drinking? It was a different time. It doesn't particularly bother me as I guess I grew up in that world. Telling my dad to quit smoking, mind you, but I do honestly enjoy the smell of pipe and cigar smoke and a good tobaconist. Never enjoyed the pipe-weed myself, but I can appreciate that it was pleasant. (And I do certainly enjoy a pint from time to time.)

^_^; the dwarf bit is.. well.. Tolkien wasn't anti-Semitic.. but he did kinda.. patronise Jews and put some of them into his take on Dwarfs... It's a bit like how I would very much say Lovecraft wasn't racist (I hate that word cause it directly refers to the old outdated view that things like skin colour denote 'sub-races' of humans.. Humans are ONE race. but that idea has been hard to fight and so they used stupid offensive terms like 'racist' but oh well) but he was very much fearful and afraid of many foreign things to a point where he had his huge break down when he was in New York for a while (which lead to 'The Horror out of Red Hook'). Even for his time, he was pretty sheltered which tainted his views, though he did write to a fair number of people.

I think alot of stuff shouldn't be 'edited' or just outright banned BUT warnings and given the correct context. Though the original creators CAN (if they want I have no real problem with it) edit stuff. Like how Hergé originally did little research when he did the newspaper strip 'Tintin', thus the.... bias view of the USSR and the Congo. later on, when he redid them for the Album versions, he did quite a few 'edits' to improve on the problem. Still in the current view, they are a bit iffy (Congo a while back was kinda 'banned' from the children's section in the UK and could only be sold as 'Adult graphic novel'. I think as with everything, as long as you have the context and stuff it's no a problem. Something which was meant as fun and no to offend, latter offends someone.. why take it out of context and say it was meant to be harmful? point out why some people are offended and let people know what's right or wrong. It's the same as when places like the USA tried to 'banned' cartoons like Tom and Jerry cause the parents couldn't be arsed to tell the kids 'you shouldn't hit someone on the head to make them lose there memory in real life' or 'squash them flat and expect them to be fine the next moment'. It is a cartoon. That is the context. It isn't real. Don't do this in real life..

sigh.. but the whole 'Lets just sit the kid infront of the TV and piss off to the party next door attuite remains as much today as in the 80s...

okay.. this is getting abit political.. but... I think Half Orcs are kinda.. ^_^ I'm sure you know how many cultures (like the USA, Vietiem, Japan, Korea) were HUGE against 'mixed race' children... like the poor half orcs

There is inter-cultural prejudice in plenty of countries, I assumed there was some (un?)subtle commentary on that in the WFB 3rd description I posted earlier, but the reader can easily just take it on face value if they wish. Wonder who contributed that bit of text?

^_^ the countries I listed was due to the major issues around WW2 till about the 1960s, specially in the army where soldiers would go over, have kids with locals and go away, with no-one wanting to help support. Some countries like England and France did (to a degree) which kinda surprises me.

For some reason, In 2ed, Goblinoid society was far more welcome of Half-orcs

I'm going to leave this little bit of Manic-splaining lie for now. But I will point out I think it's more than a bit off topic for a thread about fantasy stuff and I don't think it has anything to do with halflings being druggies. If they are druggies, then well, so am I.

it's complex but fair enough ^_^

and yep, I think if something goes wildly off-topic, 80% of the time I'm there ^_^

trying to look at some more bits and pieces.. and I find it interesting that ALL Dwarfs are said (in 3ed) to be tainted by Chaos which would kinda say they aren't all that immune to magic (and on a complete side note.. it appears the fall of the Slann was basically the same story used for the Fall of the Eldar... interesting)

anyway.. also interesting how despite they say Half-orcs are not liked by either side, a Neutral aligned one can lead a human unit, and a evil one can lead an Orc unit. I think I won't look too much more into the which 'goblinoid' they can be half of.. cause Orc and hobgoblin makes sense.. Goblin starts to run on the 'erm' side.. going to Snotling and maybe troll (sometimes they appear to be goblinoid, sometimes not) becomes ... more of an issue.
