Oldhammer Consumption

ewwww not that sort.

I am no longer on Twitter/X, Bluesky or Instagram, I rarely use reddit and my FB account will be deleted tomorrow.

I have some books of course and some films I consider to be warhammery.

But I like to look at oldhammery stuff.

Currently I am looking at blogs, but what do people who are disenchanted with the online world do to get their oldhammer feels.
Old copies of WD, re-read rules and supplements.
Are there any fanzines?

I wish to consume some oldhammery stuff, that is old GW stuff and not modern stuff in the style of, but I want to avoid social media.

Suggestions and donations of WD accepted!!

Oooh actually, is there the market for an informal WD and or GW novel book swap thing?
Rather than spend £30 on some stuff, spend £5 by posting some stuff to people to borrow and they post you some of their stuff?

Or is that too risky?

What's your WD collection look like? I have a few spares that I've not yet listed on ebay (and given the way that is going with their new shipping programme I'm starting to wonder if my ebay days are numbered).

Blogs, YouTube channels, mini wikis and digging through my old collection of magazines, books and catalogs.

As an aside and talking of books, it was picking up (and really enjoying) the first few Horus Heresy novels then the re-release of the Genevieve series that drew me back into purchasing GW products again…

Old Citadel journals, compendiums and 2nd edition scenario packs?

If your tastes run to middlehammer too, the old army books include a lot of fluff, photos & art. The 5th edition scenario packs, e.g. Perilous Quest & Grudge of Drong, are worth a read IMO. Ditto Fanatic & Town Cryer magazine if you like the specialist games.

If you're happy to do a "WD loan" I can pop together a small "care package" and send some over your way for a while, you can send them back at some point later in the year. Will PM you after I've had a rummage.

Since i mostly play fantasy theme.. It's amazing.. how little fantasy I read or have.. most of my reading is either modern or sci-fi.. or 'fairy tale like' ("Animal farm: A Fairy Story" by George Orwell, "The Last Unicorn" by Peter S. Beagle, complete works of Hans Christian Anderson, Complete works of Lewis Carol).. Though it does depend on your view of Warhammer fantasy.. do you want the dark grim stuff, or the more HCA style fantasy which is a mixture of weird, a bit dark and fanciful. I think the oldhammer stuff does seam to.. change it's mind all the time.. unlike 40K which was all just WAR-WAR-WAR!

Well in the far future there is only war!

Any of these you want to borrow?
Thanks, but I've read them all. Although I never did get on so well with the "slayer" books, not sure quite why. The house move before the last one was when I parted with a lot of my GW books. All went to good homes, but I must have given away about 30 odd books. I kept those I thought I'd want to re-read and all my "proper old" ones :)

There are a few others scattered about, but I think those are really the collection now.

I think I like mine a bit dark and fanciful, I like the more gritty and realistic (in an strange way) world of Warhammer/Old World over "high fantasy", but love the imagery of people like Ian Miller and some of Blanche's work that has that sense of the whimsical grotesque to it.

I wonder if we could do with a book thread? Recommendations both "oldhammery" in nature and just good (probably) sci-fi/fantasy, someone want to kick one off with some short reviews!? Of course it'd have to be called Critical Mass in honour of Dave Langford's column in WD.

I found the Slayer books got progressively less interesting as they progressed, and the guy that took over from Bill King, I did not like at all.
I thought they started low key and were great as ways to explore the setting, but with each story upping the ante of the previous they soon became like superhero films.

Having said that even the same author can be hit and miss, Drachenfels I thought was great, however I have tried to read Beasts in Velvet a number of times and given up.

Yo, I will tell you what I want, what I really really want, I wanna book that captures day to day life in the Empire.
Mundane encounters and good interactions with people.
I am not interested in saving the world sort of shizzle.

I think we had one in the past...

As for a bit dark.. back to HCA.. damn.. can't remember the name of the story where a witch askes a knight for favour to get an item for her in return for some gold. Instead he steals the item and gold and chops off the witch's head.. cause he is a hero.. it's... very weird, even for his christian moralistic stories..

while not quite.. for some reason the story 'Two Hearts' by Peter S. Beagle came to mind.. it's a sequel (of sorts.. more 'set in the same world with many of the same characters) from the Last Unicorn. a little village is being attacked as anyone that enters the local woods is killed. So a little girl goes to the local king for help but this just leads to more getting killed before he comes to help.. Turns out a Griffin lives there.. (that story is followed by another one with the little girl where.. erm.. she gets raped in the woods while looking for her sister.. and people claim they are kids stories ^_^)

Yep, just changed those posts back to me. I noticed I'd managed to loose the "Start Conversation" button. So had to log into the admin UI and was testing things with the admin user and mine and a test account and typed my reply in the wrong window :) Still my waffling verbiage gave me away ;)

Read this? Middlehammer at best and a reference book rather than fiction, but a cracking source of inspiration. Igor Karpov sculpted a few tasty and now OOP citizens 'inspired by' the illustrations that were sold by Alionas Miniatures.
