Work Space / Game Space / Sanctuary

He's a converted ED-209 model .... Please forgive me for indulging a bit, but old and impractical as he is, I still love him
@symphonicpoet he's awesome, love it. I've always had a super soft spot for proxy scratch built Titans for 40k, ever since seeing the "scout walkers" in Fantasy Miniatures. Those first two photos are brilliant, so atmospheric.

Looking forward to seeing the next "sanctuary" offering!

76 apparently. I just counted them. Then 54 in the roll (but they are just tatty multipack cheapo brushes for pigments, glue and big terrain bits).

I stand by the old saying "a poor craftsman blames his tools". So my theory goes if I get good enough tools then at least I can be sure it's just me being rubbish

Great man caves on this thread. Plenty of inspiration and some useful tips too. I particularly like the shop rack blister display idea.

Final thought (for now) is that I think we might need an original art thread to drool over.

A most comfortable looking space, EricF. :) Well organized, clean, brightly lit, dry. (Did I mention we got hit by the remnants of a tropical storm the other day?) You have some great art, too. I need to get what little I have properly framed so I can hang it up. (I have a bit from Carl Critchlow and Matthew Street.) And somehow we all seem to have swords. I wonder why that is? I feel like I need to go back and find a way to get my best one in a pic, since it was hidden behind a wall of carbonated beverage I'm storing for an organization.

Anyway, lovely space Eric! I am thoroughly enjoying this thread. :)

Well we have a wood burner so I need the axes (I feel three is justified for wood cutting ... probably), and well err yep zombies - it'll be the zombies, or maybe cthulhu beasties washed up by tropical storms such as Symphonicpoet has just had to deal with...

Anyway, lovely space Eric! I am thoroughly enjoying this thread.
Thank you. I only wish I had a bit more wall space for bits and pieces without just cramming them in (which I realise I could do), but all these doors windows and fireplaces seem to take up valuable room! :) If I didn't get the art framed it'd languish hidden away so I always try to get everything in a reasonable frame and then at least it's too big to properly put away!

Right well I did promise some photos of my lair...

So starting with where I supposedly work day and night. We've my main normal sized mini display cabinets up on the wall. Took me a good while to find cabinets similar to what I wanted and these are lovely, but alas more expensive than some of the wooden options around. Acrylic shelves and an acrylic cover that lifts off (you do need to be a little careful putting it back on). If you'd like to get some yourself: 1:43 Scale Model Car Display and 1:76 Scale Model Bus Display. Most of the stuff in those cases you'll have seen before, but I've not photographed the rest of my Imperial Fists yet (that yellow blob!).

A few of my larger models in the obligatory IKEA display cabinet, then a few of my old paintball markers up on the wall since I didn't know where else to put them. Modelling tools and paints are on the little trolly that I can wheel out as needed. The paints are all out of shot in Vallejo cases at the bottom of the trolly. I did try paint stands for a while in my old place, but never really had the excessive desk space for them, so went back to just putting the paints away in the cases.

Going round we have a few bits of original art up where I have some wall space and on the floor where I don't. The piece on the floor is David Pugh (2000AD/Eagle), the bits in the middle (wall & door) are Les Edwards and the bits above the door are Pete Knifton.

Then we roll round to my tower of Really Useful Boxes, holding, err, really useful stuff. Some of the lead pile, lots of scenic and basing bits, bases. A lot of small bits of dungeon terrain. Another Scout and Reaver titan (Armorcast) that I shall eventually get to and some Forgeworld pieces from the past that hopefully will one day see some paint.

Gaming book shelf. Alas I did sell off a huge number of my AD&D 2nd edition stuff some years ago (a lot of Forgotten Realms and Planescape) so that the remaining collection fitted on these shelves (also there was a good amount I was never actually going to read and if I run a campaign again it'll be WFRP 1st!). So pretty standard fare on those shelves. Few editions of WFB, and some of the GW boxed games - talisman and so forth. Various RPGs (SLA, Vampire, Paranoia, etc). Lots of WFRP. Rogue trader and the various supplements.

The drawers mostly have terrain in and junk!

My larger display cabinets. Mostly for terrain and larger models, although down the bottom I do have some unpainted bits stored there. My more recent chapel graveyard sat up on the shelves since I totally failed to plan storage... the remaining bits of graveyard "todo" are the yellow blob at the bottom of the cabinet.

The art here is Pete Knifton again, although the dragon in the middle is Tony Ackland. A few GW boxed games lurking behind those. Alas none are my original childhood ones. My brother has our entire collection of those.

We come round to the painting desk then. My cats just leave fluff everywhere (constantly picking bits off minis when I come back to them), but don't often deliberately knock stuff off. I did however move to jam jars for water (one for metallics, one for normal paint). So few bits and pieces out at present that are in the eternal state of "getting there".

My poor NightHaunts who have been mostly finished now for at least a year. Some Snotlings (you can just see the rest under the desk on top of the prison camp). The rest of my Mouslings. The Dwarf Fort. The bits on the poles are Ghouls. We've my Beasts of Nurgle on their lovely pink XPS waiting for a touchup on their primer. The rest of my Goblins from the haul and a bit of coir mat that I'm playing with as wheat field (trying to thin it out as it looks too uniform and dense right now - I should have spare if anyone wants some for the cost of postage).

Then we've my daft collection of paintbrushes, I don't know why I have so many. Well I do, but I'm going to somehow try to pretend I didn't intentionally acquire them all. Brushes for metalics and drybrushes on the left. Good brushes in the middle and less good brushes on the right. Then the really cheap and cheerful brushes in the green brush roll under the desk!

Couple more boxes of larger bits of lead pile under the desk. Along with a spray booth for the airbrush and my compressor.

Then finally coming right round (well there is a not very exciting fireplace in the bit between here and my work desk, but you don't really need to see that!) we have a bookshelf for paperbacks. Still wondering if I'll paint them to match the wall (the shelves not the books!). Your normal fantasy and sci-fi fare. These are my favourite ones. There are a lot of books elsewhere in the house. I think I have all the classic GW ones there.

Some Zoids up top (museum wax is your friend if you keep your Zoids like this). One of my swords on the wall, a spare ray-gun on the shelf and the Wizard's Tower from Tabletop World which one day I'll actually paint.

Mostly junk in the cupboards (glue, fillers, IT rubbish, etc). Also a Sisters of Battle picture down on the floor due to a lack of suitable wall space, alas just a print :( in this case, although I do have one Blanche original upstairs (but nothing anyone would know as it's not a published piece).

And there we go. That's where I lurk a fair amount of time ... I've a few fold up/down tables that occasionally come out for a small game, but even a 4'x4' is a bit squashed in the middle of the room. So I mostly hobby and dream of gaming! But to be fair the hobby aspect and the world building was always were my heart truly lies.

Like all good hobbyists I've also secreted my junk everywhere else in the house and our loft has quite a lot of terrain stored away.

Looking forward to seeing the next "sanctuary" offering!

Oooh chainsaw warrior.

Are we still talking about the predilection for sharp things amongst oldhammers or the copy of the game on my shelf?! ;)

Zombies! Of course. I suppose I do keep one pointy thing upstairs in the bedroom in case of zombies or other things that go bump in the night. Not a particularly sharp one, but the point is still doubtless enough to dissuade your average non-dead.

Geoff they look nicely laden already! Extra supports in the wall to take the weight of all the lead no doubt!
