Why oh why....

were great dragon ogre miniatures replaced by awful ones?

Why oh why chaos dwarves with big hats?

Why oh why Nagash?

etc.

:(

What does the line about the big hats mean? (careful here).
I know it can be an aquired taste but sometimes this shows the true connisseur... ;)

Big hat chaos dwarves?

Uh-uh... I kinda like the Marauder dragon ogre and later Michael Perry ones! I snapped up a bunch when GW did buy two, get one free deals. I know in most people's eyes I wasted that deal! I would of course prefer the original. The new plastic ones do nothing for me though. :)

I've never been sure if I like big hat Chaos Stunties. I sold all of mine when I didn't like them, and I only occasionally regret it.

Redonkulous hats for fighting in combat.
But well, what I dislike more about the Big Hat Chaos Dwarves is that they seem more 'evil' than 'chaotic'.

Why oh why?

Because the 90s. 8-)

Assuming that's not purely rhetorical question! The changes are probably due to the commercial pressures between the Kirby buy-out and the IPO, and staff changes in the design studio.

I can imagine that the original Chaos Dwarfs didn't look distinctive enough from Chaos Warriors - and perhaps would be seen as a 'cheaper' version of such, so a different design direction was taken. Why that specific Assyrian design, I don't know. Dragon Ogres, again a change in the people working on the concept art and the sculptors, but conversely rather than having a more distinctive design, they were brought more in-line with the other GW portrayals of ogres at the time. Overall there is an erasure of subtlety in design in favour of clear visual distinction between categories of thing, a move away from naturalism towards symbolic representation (with all the 'cartoony' and 'toylike' connotations that goes with that).

But it's not a period of GW I'm interested in enough to bother actually finding out. Not my cup of tea either, it's easier to just ignore that stuff. For Chaos Dwarves you've got the original ones, Delaney Kings Bederken, the current Forgeworld Rank and File offerings, Clams Ewal Dvergar.

Dragon Ogres tho, don't think anyone is making suitable versions of those. Gap in the market! quick!

Why oh why goblin green bases?

That one I'll never get. I know they repeated "because it photographs well/true to the real-life colour", but it still looked terrible. During the 90s, when they occasionally showed an army or single model with a more realistic colour it really stood out as better! I had a look through the 2nd edition 40k rulebooks the other day and I really do remember loving those occasional urban grey bases. The less said about goblin green Necromunda bases the better...

I like this retro nerd "rant" thread. While the rest of the GW internet world is raging about Age of Sigmar, we have our own thread about the design direction of changes that happened in the early 90s, especially as the casual visitor reading it might assume they had only just happened.

The pure green bases policy was particular weird. I was painting for shops (Croydon, I think) at the time, and remember being told to stop doing my more complex and attractive process in favour of the plain green paint on a raw plastic base (so it wasn't just they lacked resources in the design studio to do better - it was a deliberate design decision).

Why oh why goblin green bases?

I got told off by a staff member around '93/94 in the Harrow store for painting my bases.... Umm forest green! Nooo I was such a rebel heh

Yeah, I remember not being allowed to use my Brother's Skarloc's Wood Elf Archers in store unless I painted the edges of the bases green, to top all off they wouldn't let me borrow a paint brush either so I ended up having to use my finger. Erny wasn't impressed when I got home...........................

I was only 13 - bloody GW Party Line Towing Staff, and the Manager eat all my sweets, that was Luton GW for you

Why oh why Nagash?

:(
The story I heard went like this ... Gary sculpted Nagash but the mini got rejected because a higher up (who shall remain nameless) didn't like the face. So Gary, with his arse out, sculpted the most stupidly pants face he could and submitted it again in the expectation that they would just go with the original design .... they didn't. :cries:
Some say it didn't happen that way ... but that is what I heard.

Lets have a look what you could have won:

To be fair, the face is probably the least pants part of the god-awful christmas-tree thing.

I quite like the Nagash figure with he giant skull head, it was the PJ the Studio gave it that sucked ass.

There was a time when I hated the big hat dwarfs with a passion. I find myself strangely drawn to them these days, although not in the red/black scheme you always see them in....help...meeeeeeee......

It's funny how some things grow on you over time. There are things I hated back in the day or wasn't too keen on that these days I quite like. Hated Heroquest and Space Crusade, now wish I had them. Didn't like the silly football hooligan orc/orks of the early 90's but now I rather like them (at least the 40K stuff anyway). Wasn't keen on most of Marauder's stuff but now like most of it.

Aesthetics change plus utter crap can be considered treasure when retro makes it cool.

That said I've always been partial to the Marauder stuff.
