For Sale White Dwarf magazine, #1 to #33 inclusive - advice re selling

Hello - I’m new here and hope this is the best place to post.

I have a collection of ‘White Dwarf’ magazines that I’d like to sell, and could do with some advice on their value and where best to sell them (ebay?).

It’s a complete set Issue 1 to Issue 33 inclusive, plus ‘The Best of White Dwarf Scenarios’ (1980). They are all first print run copies in good condition.

Would it make sense to sell the early editions separately, or do you think it would be better to sell everything as a job lot?

Any advice gratefully received - thanks in advance.

Had some queries about selling early issues on here last year, these are the threads:

General advice seems to be sell earlier issues separately!

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

Generally you'll get better prices individually since you're more likely to find buyers. So much as I hate seeing collections broken up (not quite sure why, but it pains me!) that's probably the better bet if you're not desperate to shift them all in one go. Of course if you are feeling super kind I expect there are some people here who'd like them!

The first six or so white dwarfs seem to be the ones that sell for the more silly money still. Issue #1's price does vary quite a bit, if you track back through the threads there was a guy selling a collection that'd been in storage for many years and I think we noted some pricing in those threads. I mean I can point you to a 1st edition for a few hundred quid that's badly titled on ebay (which is why it's not sold) or to a first print run that was a Buy It Now (and accepted an offer of ?) that was on at £1200. Generally it would seem you could expect probably £400-1000 for the first issue depending on who's around to buy it (assuming we're talking ebay here). I doubt you'll get any takers here for that kind of money. The later issues up to maybe about #6-10ish probably more like £80-150 ish. After that I'm less sure, but you're probably much more down in the £20-50 kinda areas at a guess.

To be honest I tend to think WD is a bit over priced and I'm sure the ease of locating PDFs these days has impacted sales, but as ever something is worth what someone will pay for it and there still seem to be deep pockets out there! I'd just watch out on ebay now it's all "simple shipping" for private sellers that anything you do sell for a good amount is properly insured in transit and tracked and not just chucked about by EVRI ...

Anyhow best of luck!

Since it might be of use to record. I see a couple of White Dwarf issue #1s have gone for considerably less recently. £170 and £207. I mean obviously that's expensive for a magazine, but considerably more reasonable than the ~£1k we'd seen some go for. I could imagine I might have considered something around £100-150 mark if I was completing the collection. Think I paid £60 for my copy of issue 1, but that was a good number of years back.

Interesting to know. I see #1 currently on sale at £500 upwards on eBay at the moment.

I can't be faffed with trying to sell things individually, so I'm considering selling all 34 zines as a job lot for £1,500 - is that reasonable, do you think? Or still over-priced?

So hard to know. Why not post it up as a "Buy it Now" on ebay (you can opt to let people make offers if you want, worst case you reject lowballs) and see if you get any takers!

The auctioned issue #1s do seem to have been cheaper recently, but prices can be up/down. I mean someone got a bit of a bargain here on a set of WDs. Hard to know what the offer someone took on this issue #3. A slightly battered issue #5 for £55. Issue #2 sold for £35. Doing some rough sums after having a quick look now it could be anything from £700 to £1700 easily enough! Would you be happy with £1500? If so give it a whirl!
