WHFB 3rd: War Beast units

Dwarf

Serf
Hello,

I am making a Chaos army list using the 3rd edition Warhammer Armies book. I would like to include a unit of Chaos Centaur.

The points for Chaos Centaurs are listed under Character Models, however in the Rulebook it states that War Beasts do not have to have riders. As such, if I were to include a unit of Chaos Centaur in my list, which category (characters, R&F etc.) would the points cost count against?

Having re-read the rules for Warbeasts, I'm now even more confused. It states that War Beasts may be ridden, but don't have to be. It then goes on to say that all War Beasts need a controller (who usually rides the beast). Then all the subsequent explanations assume that the beast is ridden and no explanation is given to the case when a controller does not ride the war beast...

Thanks,
Dwarf.

The warhammer armies list does not allow a unit of centaurs, since they are not listed in the rank and file section nor under chaos host.

I think the warbeasts listed in the character model section are intended to be used only as mounts for characters.

Full rules for centaurs are in the Lost and the Damned book. They appear in the army list of Tzeentch. Up to two units of 310 points for 9 centaurs with hand weapons.

The only thing i suggest is to ignore the army list restrictions and just include them anyway as rank and file. They are interesting mnis and fit in with the spirit of a chaos army very well. I would forget the thing about warbeasts and treat them as a sentient race.

Centaurs in Warhammer were originally a goodly race, and only became Chaotic much later, so in 3rd edition they should be quite a rare thing.

You can spend up to half your points allocation on characters, so I'd just take as many Centaur characters as you would like, and field them as a unit, or 'a bunch of characters in base to base contact'.

Or as weismonsters suggests, use Realm of Chaos rather than Warhammer armies, but it's a different beast, and the PV allocations are different.

If I were you I would just not worry about points to that extreme level of detail and anxiety. They are a guideline...nothing more.

Oh good point. Totally true. 0-50 chaos centaurs. A chaos army can spend up to half its points on chaos allies. So problem solved- even the most rulebound of opponents could not object.

Thanks for all the suggestions! :)

I never realised Chaos Centaurs were listed under Allies. It never even occurred to me to check there!

Thanks! :)
