To follow on from my topic posted in the General Discussions forum, I have begun painting my pre slotta 2nd edt army

To begin with I'm painting the unit of 10 Chaos Warriors; first up is one my fav models:

I am a fan of muted tones as oppose to bright and garish, so will go for more 'earthy' colours throughout my army. I have chosen a colour range from Vallejo Model colour from their WWII palette, so colours like:

70.822 German Black Brown
70.888 Olive Grey
70.830 German Field Grey
70.920 German Uniform

As he is adorned with Spiders, I will highlight and emphasise the spider motifs with Vallejo 72.104 Fluo Green to give the model a 'venomous' feel.

More to follow

Muted tones seems a good way with those I just hope you keep enough contrast because those models require some (personnal opinion only). I'm right behind you following every step now

Is he wearing Fireman's wellies?

Even more hilarious is that I originally wrote 'fireman's willies'- which is entirely wrong!

Perhaps if this were a Slaaneshi army.....

OK, one model finished and on to the next!

To tie the models together I have used the same colour palette on the cloak of second model, but have gone for a traditional 'Steel' coloured armour. The mace I wanted to look enchanted, so have given it a blue tinge and the shield I wanted to appear as metallic, but give the appearance that the demon trapped inside was alive so have layered some blue, green and purple washes on to a silver surface!

I'm still getting used to my new photo studio and have not yet grasped the best position for the lighting (any tips welcome!!), I'm not so happy with the pictures as the models in person are much richer and the pics are still too shiny for my liking

I really like those, the restricted palette with spot colours on wepond and details will work wonders in group. I ùmay be a little balanced onteh cloak which is too close in tone to the armour, i'd ad some pattern (maybe tartan) or give it a glaze to change the hue for something a little wrmer as a contrast with the cold grey of the steel.
Apart from that, I love it and actually grasp better how to paint those, (only have 2 but have postponed them for a while becase I couldn't see how to start on them).

As for lighting and photos, I'll let Mr Dever and Mr Chalk do the explanations pages 36 HERE you'll agree they know the job...

Thanks for the comments JB, I gave the cloak a glaze of GW Fiery Orange 61-08 and it looks very good ;)

I have completed this model now and have started work on the 3rd, I'll attempt to get some pictures up later.

OK pre slotta lovers, an update :)

I have been attempting to improve my photography skills and reduce the awful glare from the first 2 posts! The results are better, not perfect but getting there at least!!!

2mwge8n.png

2mdnm7l.png

As mentioned above I added a glaze of Fiery Orange to the cloak of the mace armed model, a wash of warlock purple to the shield to increase the depth and then finished off the missing bits, such as the mouth!

The 3rd model is almost complete, just thinking about how to approach the eyes within the helmet..... :? Again I used a muted colour palette, the cloak is Foundry British Red Coat shade 68A, for the shadows in the cloaks fold I added progressive amounts of Vallejo Umber Shade wash and a final wash of warlock purple in the deepest parts. the tunic is Vallejo 70.920 German Uniform and the weapon, like the first two has a sense of enchantment and has been tinted with Vallejo 70.827 Lime Green.

Comments always welcome

OK, I have started on the 4th model whilst deciding about the eyes on the red cloaked figure:

I have tried a white background this time, although the glare has gone, the white has swallowed up most of the light, so now it's a bit dark  Damn this photography thing!

The armour on the 4th model has been painted first with Vallejo 70.800 Gunmetal Blue and then given a wash of GW Nuln Oil to reduce the shine.

More to follow soon.

Looking great, going on a special colourscheme for each model is incredibly brave ! I'd be scared helpless by such a task ! It is an excellent way to make th ebest of these though. I have the 3rd guy mylsef and couldn't satrt working on it because I didn't know what to do with the eyes, you've just given me ideas. i think some glowing magical eyes would be just the thing here.

have you already thought about the basing or not ?

Merci :)

I like the background given to Chaos in the 1st and 2nd Edition rules as it refers to the Warriors and Marauders as bands roaming the North which raid, so I did not see any need or reason for any sense of uniform, as they are individual Warriors, so I wanted to keep this essence alive with using an individual colour scheme per model and tie them loosely together by using drab tones on the clothing and accessories.

Not sure on the bases yet. I will not go down the route of the spectacular models by Don Hans, he went for an arid and blasted wasteland look, I may look at Tundra or some other form or a spartan/barren landscape.

I'm a big fan of Don Hans' but the tundra or abrren way would be loevely to tie all this. Even in their flamboyance, Hans' bases are limited in colour which helps get a unified look in his army.
The uniform is really a tricky thing, while it really helps get a very coherent and impressive global look it realy makes one lose painting opportunities especially with those old models which are all unique. I'm glad to see people taking that route of making models individuals to then tie them with base, banners shiled devices and all.

Sadly not much progress, but I have been working on photography! Here are some newer pictures of the 4 models I am working upon:

Now, photography! I have a Nikon D40 SLR camera, I have it set to 'A' (aperture mode) and f/2.8 to let in maximum light, when I shine 2 lamps directly at the models the results are the pictures you see above, which are darkish, when I add a 3rd light directly from above, the pictures appear too bright! If anyone has some good tips on lighting and/or camera settings, I'd be grateful

That rust armour is incredibly good, I woudln't feel comfortable with this guy next to me even if I were a chaos warrior... :?

As for photos, maybe you can try a dark backgroundto force setting the light on the model (hope I'm clear enough) if you're using direct light, you can also smooth it by placing transparent paper (like techical drawing paper or baking paper on front of your light sources. I'm no pro when it come to photos (you can tell from my pics) but these are advices I often read and that Iv'e seen working.

Bracket your exposure on your camera. It'll take 3 pictures at different exposures and pick the one you like best. You can also bracket around different exposures if you need to.

A long time since an update

So, Chaos Warrior number 6 is completed, Mr Billy the Cleaver.....

I re took the pictures of all the models, this time using a graduated light blue background; the quality is better, but the background appears as a grey in the pictures? Perhaps my Aperture is too high? Too much light during exposure? Anyway here's the rest of the models once more:

It sounds to me like the white balance is incorrectly handled by the camera. The first port of call should be to see if your camera has some presets for different lighting conditions. If it does then try them to see which gives the most accurate colour range for your lighting setup. You may also be able to change where the camera reads the light/white balance from, usually either center-point or whole-frame - this can also have a big effect. If it doesn't have any presets (quite rare these days on digital cameras), and/or the colours are still slightly off (very common even these days!) an image editor, such as the open source GIMP which I use, is required.

Once you've got the hang of tweaking you can work through images pretty fast, usually takes me about 20secs per image. There's a tutorial here with a couple of easy techniques without too much hassle. I use a bunch of other methods as well sometimes but I can't find a decent tut for them!

Those are looking really good now, the difference a better picture makes is remarkable.
I really like the guy third from left, he looks horrible.

OK, Warrior 7 is finished and number 8 has its base colours done:

Thinking over what colour tint I should give this chaps armour...... I have a fluro orange from Vallejo that I'm mulling over....... once its thinned down and reworked over with Steel, it should look quite vibrant, lets see!

Basing is also a point I need to nail down, I'm heading in the direction of some form of Tundra, as these Warriors would form part of a raiding army sweeping from the frozen north.

I hope you like the latest instalment of memories  ;)

Cheers
