I am struggling to work out why people are excited for TOW when they already have existing WFB rules and armies.
I know some people that are starting TOW and are not using their old models from WFB.
They are not even starting TOW to be able to play in GW shops as they are using printed non-official models.
Why are they not using their old models with the new rules, or their old models with their old rules.
The people I know, play at each others homes, with printed models.
Why not just play with what they have, if the excitement of TOW means they want to get back into WFB with a new army rather than with their old ones, why not use the rules they have and know and just get a new army, why get new rules too, especially when they won’t be playing with people outside their friend circle.
If it makes them happy then great, but I genuinely don’t get it, is it just succumbing to the hype?
I also see loads of comments online about how people can use their WFB armies again at last…
They always could!
I sometimes feel like I am outside the bigger social circle of the wargames hobby, playing non in vogue rules, I have never been into the current big brand boxed games.
Never did AoS.
Never did Flames of War or Bolt Action, never did anything which was served up in bite size boxes with all the rules printed and done for you.
There has always been choices to make, things to fill out, other ways of playing it.
It means there is more thinking and work, but I think I prefer that.
I was talking to my wife the other day about the oldhammer community, and how the people that play it are doing it as they love it, it is not current, it is not cheap, it is not in vogue or easy to find people that have compatible models/rules to play with.
Some of the oldhammer folks have always been oldhammer, I stopped around the time of 4th edition WFB and came back into WFB about 4 years ago, many never left.
That is dedication and love for something right there, people that have been playing the same thing for 30 years or more.
Is it about knowing what you like and sticking with it and not being sucked away with new shiny products?
I suspect that many people who are getting into TOW now will not be playing it in 5 years’ time, let alone 25 years.
That is what I love about oldhammeryness, the love is real.
Anyway, that is my morning rant/waffle/out spilling over, time for another coffee and get on watch duty, the rumblings of chaos is always about.
