Warhammer Fantasy Regiments - 3rd Edition plastics

I know they've been done before and far better (including dioramas for goodness sake!) but over the holidays I did manage to finish one mini project - painting one each of the Warhammer Fantasy Regiments races. So here are my efforts and my best attempt at a box art mock up too!

I have loads of fond memories of these, both playing with and against, and I've been using them as a way to motivate myself whenever I got fed up with whatever I was painting. So I'm going to kind of miss having them on the painting desk - although I don't have enough figures (or desire!) to do all the variants.

Although it did have me thinking of what other plastics there were of that vintage? Notwithstanding the games (Hero quest, Advanced Heroquest, Dungeon quest, Questquest etc. which I will not be doing as that way leads to madness) I could only think of the Plastic Horde/Army skeletons, Psychostyrene Dwarf and Drastic Plastic Orc. I have the first 2 from back in the day so I'll add those to the pile. Are there any others I've missed? And does anyone have Drastic Plastic Orc they're willing to part with for a sensible amount of blood and/or treasure?

the FF range were.. 60mm for some reason..
other then the board game and related sets (you forgot Battle Masters ^_^) the only ones you didn't mention from the time were the 40K ones, Marines and Orks
 
Lovely. The Fantasy Regiments set has always been a favourite. There was a bit in one of the journals about plastics I was reading the other day, I'll have to dig it out.
 
Thanks all. I actually put some green stuff on an old plastic skeleton last night so he's in for a glow up.

Bizarrely (considering how many hours I spend mooching through old lead stuff) I don't think I'd ever seen those Fighting Fantasy miniatures before. And then I saw the 54mm scale which made me a bit sad, but not as sad as when I saw the prices on Ebay! Although you can go all in and get 22 figures for £1000 on one listing!?!?!

Good call on Battle Masters - I think it snuck in just before 4th was released? And I do have some Orks (still on spue from when I was a kid!) and I think I have enough bits to make a single marine from various bulk buys over the years - so they're going on the list. I also realised I'd missed out (if stretching out to 40k) Space Hulk (and Deathwing), although having traded way all the bits I stole from childhood friends over the years - I'm kind of loath to start buying them back. I might branch out to anything Fantasy that came with a slotta base - which worrying does include Advanced Hero quest - after the obvious 3rd Edition and 40k stuff

Thanks - and I'm pleased to see I'm not the only lunatic that spends time perusing old Citadel Journals!

Found the article I had in mind. Attached a rough photo of the page should anyone wish to see what GW's plastic thoughts were back in the day. Alas we didn't get a plastic chaos warrior (or at least I don't remember one!)

I was also reminded me about a thread I posted a while back about Drastik Plastic https://forum.oldhammer.org/threads/drastik-plastik-orcs-in-late-style-blister.35989/ alas that blister isn't for sale and despite my general "play with the toys" approach I'll probably keep this as a display piece.

The other "Fighting Fantasy" bit that seems fairly unknown is the dungeon, although I'd always got the impression that was "25mm" scale, so maybe the branding was just that. Alas it's not something I've ever seen in the flesh styrene. Still would love to have one.

Thanks for the article. I remember it as a kid, probably right at the start of my Warhammer journey; I tried to replicate Forarmd Forwarnd and failed dismally. And I definitely wasn't after a Drastik Plastik orc in a blister - more an unloved, assembled version covered in oils that someone was never going to get around to painting!

Anyway, this thread is already causing trouble as, instead of being a wholesome father or doing the DIY list, I spent the morning painting and hence present my next contribution to the 2nd/3rd (ish) edition plastics - A Skeleton Warrior. I owned (and actually painted) the Skeleton Army box as a kid and they served with minimal success in 3rd and 4th Editions. So this is a makeover of one of my old figures plus a bit of a green stuff. Green stuffing (?) as I wanted to keep in the spirit (so basing style and shield colours) of my old figures but at the same time jazz up the shields a bit, along with a strap on the back you can't see. Base is too busy really but then it's hard to mix only a little bit of green stuff so I had to do something with it!

These figures have held up very well, even if more than two facial expressions would be nice. Young me did paint shield rims on most of the skeletons - he must have forgotten on this one.
And now, technically, an Archer and Riders are on the list too. I may give the chariot a miss, primarily as the plastic one went in the bin having been squished at some point!.

Thanks, he/she should really have rusty metal kit but there was already a lot of warm red/orange in the wood and bases so I thought the normal metal colour would look better. And besides, I'm the kind of necromancer who makes sure his mindless automations look after their weapons. It's not like they need to sleep, so they might as well work the grindstone! Muahahah (or something like that!).
 
The next part of the plastic stuff from my yoof montage. The full-ish Skeleton Army skeillibob set. Full-ish as I can't face painting the chariot (and it will also require me buying a plastic one when I own two of the superior metal variety already which seems excessive even for me).

With hindsight I don't know why i didn't clean up one of the figures with armour or maybe one not carrying a sword - it would have made the metals easier too. Anyway, the Skellibobs (and Skellijanes):

As the Death Rider was finished in February by my reckoning this is also 2 challenges done:

Femuary - It's a lady skeleton on the horse (and she's naked.....).
Femur-uary - the lesser know budget version of Deadcember.

It looks like I will have to paint a dwarf although I have just the ancient plastic chap in mind!

Is this going to be one of those 'after all these years!' type revelations? I just assumed (and have always assumed) it was some metal clip and at times have painted the whole tip in metal (it's what GW with their Tomb King archers). Hadn't even crossed my mind the loops were supposed to indicate the bows' strings. Live and learn.

And this may be an unexpected benefit of not using metallic paints. It's blue string. Very common amongst the undead you know.....

To be honest I am not 100% sure, but I have always assumed that and can not think what else they could be.
Warhammer is fantasy for sure, but they do like to use a lot of history as a guide and I have not seen any bows with metallic rings/hoops.
They are sort of where the string would be?

I just assumed they were there for people to anchor the string, plastic rod whatever they use as bow string to.

I always thought it was the edge of the metal bow tips which English Long bows had cause the cord (string) went into nochs on the tips which then had a metal cover...

EDIT:
Horn Nochs! that's what they are called, even the metal ones it appears
