Wargaming sand question

I just use builders' sand, have also found the stuff from fire buckets pretty similar to what GW sold. I doubt it was anything special.

Such blasphemy! You'll be telling me their flock was made from common sawdust next! ;)

Loose - If you don't want a huge amount (ie 25kg) then have a look for smaller bags of play sand in toy shops and the like. What era Citadel sand were you after? I never did go much for the GW flocks and whatnot at the time so I'm not familiar with how many releases they did.

Thanks for replies guys!

I remember that GW sand was granulated so to say. I did bought few miniatures that already got sand on the bases and then I compared them with what I use now ( coral sand from pet shop! Not bad at all, got variety in sizes but also in shapes that tend to be in the way and if I separate small from bigger ones I end up with very fine sand that is no good I think. ) and it's much bigger and drybrushing is much easier and more effective.

I found something similar? Gale Force 9 basing grit?

Was watching Latham and he uses GW sand, and that's the sand more less I'm after. That GF9 sand looks similar? Any thoughts? I mean, I'll use builder's sand ( or body builder sand? hehe ) if it's like this one even thou it looks to me that it's very fine, extra small grains.

You could take a look at the different scales of ballast that Woodland scenics do. The do a graded range (see pic below) of ballast. I think I have the medium and corse up at my office and could try to take some pictures next week which might give you and idea of the range of sizes in each bag, but maybe a mix of fine and medium would work? Might even have some GW sand to compare to! Personally I don't tend to use sand much anymore having switched to the Vallejo Earth/Ground Textures a while back and just occasionally refill a pot from the sandpit when needed, but I get where you are coming from trying to match the older stuff.

Another option might be to see what stuff Luke has over at Geek Gaming he has quite a wide range of basing sands and mixes.

Oh cheers!

That's what I'm looking for. I called one shop here in city that have Green Stuff World products and they got that 0.5mm sand and some 1mm-3mm sand, so I'll go later to get them. Hope it's similar to those that you posted. On first glance I think they are but then again who knows hehe I also got GWs texture paints like Armageddon Dust and Stirland Battlemire, use them for hard to reach places that I would messed up when applying glue. Nothing wrong with them or with that coral sand but as I didn't do much of basing in the past, so I'm starting from entry level and then I'll, over time, start to add few other things to basing. I mean, I can see that my basing is more then simple and almost dull.

Cheers,

I use sand from the local beach. It’s has decent sized grains. Take it home, boil it, dry it in an old emulsion tray. For painting it I tend to use AP wet mud paint then a layer of ink. Looking at the price of basing materials I should maybe start selling it as a side hustle

hehe well, you are on internet, place where everything worth something.

Did buy that Green Stuff World sand, to be precise Hobby Sand - Thin. Should be 0,5mm class. I did put that on few minis so I;m waiting paint to dry. Really can't tell if it's good or not hehe
