Wargames Foundry Hundred Years War Citadel?

Hi there,

I have recently been digging into the old catalogues and Wargames Foundry. Having looked at the Hundred Years War range I noticed some units like the Foot Knights look eerily similar to the old Bretonnian counterparts. I am aware these were sculpted by the Perry Twins but I have also read online this range was intended for the Chivalry game that didn't release. Apparently, some of these models would then be released under Bretonnia. I sometimes see sellers on Ebay labelling these individually as OOP Bretonnian range.

Is there anywhere I can learn more about this? I was aware that Wargames Foundry host a lot of ex citadel models - including old artillery pieces and crew, but the hundred years war range in particular interests me.

Can't say it's my area of expertise (but someone will probably be along ...) but I think some of the unlisted ones can be found on the http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=4154_Bretonnian_Foot_Knights wiki. You might also want to wander through this thread if only for the wow factor! https://forum.oldhammer.org/threads/my-bretonnia-collection.17486/

Anyhow welcome onboard, hopefully someone with a bit more familiarity with that range can provide some more information.

As far as am aware, the deal that Bryan Ansel got when leaving Citadel meant pretty much all the historical lines went with him, you will find most of the old Bretonnia/Empire lines there. Though you will probably see the odd idiot selling a modern foundry release as a Citadel for some reason.

I recently picked up some old Bretonnian Foot Knights in the blister still. While looking at the old catalogues I did notice the Wargames Foundry Foot Knights did look identical in sculpt design with the 1989 range, with some transitioning into the more 1991 style. Given the talk about this being a former Chivalry line I could understand what happened; but with only some of the models officially going to Bretonnia while some stayed OOP.

I am tempted to buy some and mix them in with my purchase.

These two units have some models in them sold on Ebay as being former Bretonnian. The claim this line was supposed to be for Chivalry, but when they cancelled it some of those models were put into blisters. I couldn't find them on the old catalogues, and my assumption would be either they just threw them into mixed blister packs regardless to get rid of stock or some of these models became 'uncatalogued' / unreleased stock (as some sellers are listing them as). Or it's just a total lie on the sellers end, as some claim this is what the sculptors said without source.

What makes the Ebay listings different is they have metal slot fittings on the bottom with names on, where as these are solid metal bases instead. For example: here - here and here. These three can be found in the Wargames links above.

Personally I am more interested in the idea these may have been unreleased models that Wargames Foundry may have picked up and sold for intended purpose rather than Bretonnian. I like that the sculpts are very close (if not the same) as the two batches of Foot Knights they made.

Foundry tend to do puddle bases - the sculpts will still be from the same masters - its just when they made up their (Foundry) master molds that's the way they do the bases. As Manic said Foundry (Bryan) took a good chunk of the more historical type models - plenty that were not released at the time (some have subsequently been released) so these will indeed be the same sculpts and should mix in very nicely with what you have.

I think there is a very good chance they just made up some blisters - I've seen Drastik Plastic orcs in the red/yellow blister packaging - which is vastly later than when they were available - suggesting that sometimes they threw the "left overs" into blisters and popped them on shelves!

I'd suggest dropping the Perry twins an email (address on their site) and asking! My observation is that pretty much all the old Citadel crew are very welcoming and open to having their brains picked if asked nicely! They would probably remember if they'd been commissioned for a Chivalry line specifically and it'd be interesting to know. That said I think there is a good chance the Perry twins were just churning out knights :)

FWIW I get a niggling feeling that both those ebay listings look like recasts. Probably of the original GW/Citadel models since they have tabs. Both look a bit off to me, especially the US one. Not that as I said I'm familiar with the range so just my tuppence. It might be that calling them Bretonnian is much better sales wise on eBay in the same way you see some of the new GW names on old model listings.

I posted the wrong thread from @Duke of Gisoreux earlier - I meant to do the archive thread which has more close up pictures:

They have not been active on the forum recently, but the @ notation normally triggers an alert and they might have email alerts turned on so may see it and provide some wisdom!

well.. for the idea for throwing old stuff onto modern blisters (makes sense to me) we have a resident former mail room troll to ask ^_^ come in @dieselmonkey I'm being a bother again ^_^

Very interesting! I will give them a poke and ask. I am curious how much of the HYW range on Wargames was unreleased Citadel stuff and what could have been Bretonnian bits.
