WFB4 Unit spacing

Probably apples to 3ed too but as I'm mostly going via 4ed rules, can any one remember if there are set rules (and what they are) for how close together a unit's figures must remain? I'm trying to design the movement tray for a Giant Rat pack and it's 2 pack masters, but.. the Giant rats have giant rats which are almost the length of the figure itself, meaning the Pack master can't be directly behind the pack if they all rank up. So the choice is either to have the Row of Giant rats not quite rank up, with small.. about 10mm (half a base) between them, or atleast a couple of them, so the Pack Masters aren't being attacked by tails, OR have the pack masters about 40mm BEHIND the front row on the tray.. that seams a bit... too far away to me but I can't remember, nor can a quick check find if they must be in base contact, or within a set distance from the rest to be classed as a full unit..

doesn't greatly matter I guess but would be nice to know ^_^

From a skim of the 4th edition rules I can't see anything regarding spacing beyond talking about models in base to base contact for units. Skirmishers can be 2" apart, I think the rules seem to say that model are nominally touching base to base. Personally I'd opt to mix the pack masters in a bit as it sounds like it will look better than them being miles behind.

Was looking into 5ed as they're quite similar and into 4ed army book of Skaven. Practically nothing. Maybe I've missed something except, 1 inch rule, so if you're not able to arrange miniatures so they could be base to base, then it's enough to be max of 1 inch apart. They also mention that pack is moving at the speed of packmaster, but when they charge, packmaster, as he's slower then the rest he doesn't attack first turn? Is he in front once fight is on? Who ever attacks the pack can allocate attacks to the pack or the packmaster, it seems. On images they're always base to base contact at the rear, but then again so are the Chaos Knights, all nice and ranked haha I don't think it's that much important because Dragons wouldn't work then, and all those troops that have spears in front ( sounds like material for power players )?
