Throwing Weapons

Say your model is armed with a spear, and clearly it is the only spear the model is carrying -- perhaps the only weapon the model is carrying -- but you decide to throw the spear anyway during the Shooting phase...is your model now unarmed?

On the unarmed thing - no, your basic model always has a hand weapon, so even if they throw away their spear they would still have the hand weapon. I like the WYSIWYG thing when it comes to models in general, but a reasonable amount of abstraction is also reasonable.

I also think it's safe to say that a warrior in a battle would be extremely unlikely throw away their only weapon if faced with any sort of functioning enemy, so even for models only with a hand weapon I'd say they wouldn't throw that but some sort of improvised weapon. Perhaps if they were throwing something at a fleeing enemy at the end of a battle they might throw an actual weapon at them, but more likely they'd find something from a nearby corpse, or a rock or some such, and throw that.

And lastly on the spear example specifically - a proper stand-in-a-shieldwall-and-stab spear isn't a throwing spear. They were about 8' long and heavy, by no means a javelin or light throwing spear (unlike the Roman examples discussed above). So (although I'm not sure what the rules say) again I'd say improvised when it comes to throwing stats.

They were the first ranged weapons, developed before the adoption of bow and arrows, but have been used throughout history in many different forms from all over the world..
