Yes this is the definition of too far....and look at Liberace for 20 seconds....and now it seems OK again.

Brilliant !

Well, I agree the rubber guinea pig is a bit too far-fetched and it looks like crap let's face it. BUT I'm pretty sure there is an opportunity here and that sculpting a 25x50 mm based guinea pig is not that a big deal...
Damn south Park episode...

Stuffing pet animals... :? is there a limit to what we can do for this hobby?

(that said, there was a guy in a club I played at who had given real lobster/crab/shrimp/scorpion parts to all his tyrannids and it looked awesome though it smelled like hell...)

The green you chose very good and has a good contrast with the creamy white. Simple shields and classy clubs on top of that, top job in my book.

Great stuff Sean!

Its going to be fun to get these guys on the table and riddle them with imaginary miniature projectiles.

Personally, I think that the pan-pipe driven giant guinea pig is a step too far - that time could be spent on more useful miniature endeavours - but who am I to dictate? And you wouldnt listen anyway ;D

No, you're right Cheetor, it's the sordid truth, it's why I am going to make this guinea pig thingee when I get my venator heads  I'll just leave the base intact and they will be good to go.

The froggy green works great! I really like how you use subtle variations to make the exact same minis look diferent within units.

Pulling together all of those Slann for an army is a project in itself.

Thanks for all the +ve comments guys!

The giant guinea pigs is low on the priority list at the moment. ;)

I will work on the mage/psyker riding the cold one next so that I can use him in the games with Cheetor in a couple of weeks.

Great progress on the green Slann, they look excellent.

I love the skin tones and underbelly colour, very realistic, and the eyes work really well too. I also like how you have re-positioned the the Slann, making them more dynamic.

I might have to move my Slann army re-vamp up my 'to do' list. :)

Not sure about Giant Guinea pigs! Perhaps you could convert up a plastic Dinosaur in the same way as shown in White Dwarf#100? You could field it as a bound wingless Dragon?

I love what you're doing with these Slaan. How on earth did you manage to assemble that many?

Cheers

Thanks Goblinlee. I tend to try to base any Slann I paint on a real frog, nature is never short of suggestions and Google image search is a great help. The beauty of painting frogmen is that you have complete freedom in choice of colours. That kind of freedom fits nicely with the Oldhammer ethos to my mind. Reposing is pretty easy with these models but you have to be careful with the tools not to damage them or break them on the bends it helps to be very confident in your modelling skills should you mess up. Silicone is a great material for cushioning the model when reposing.

The Dinosaur idea is a good one and I have a couple of models in the wings for that. I agree that using it as a wingless dragon is a good approach to fielding a dinosaur. It would be madness to start any of that lark until I have a couple of units done up. When I can afford the time for it I will probably buy some of the forgeworld dragon beasts as they are top notch sculpts.

I will definitely buy this as this is an appropriate mount for my Slann wizard lord as a centrepiece for the army:

That's easy, I have a time machine. Well that's an obvious lie, otherwise I would just get my finished army from a future timeline and post it.

Happy you like them. Near as I can figure it I was the only person in Ireland who actually bought any Slann models in the 90's. Certainly I was the only one who actually played with a Slann army. Basically I have a very decent collection of models to work from and have pretty good parts fabrication skills 8-) so I don't have to rely on Ebay so much.

100% with you on what nature rbings as inspiration fodder.
You can actually rank frogs from the least to the most dangerous and give the colours in th esame order to lowest troops (Braves) to the highest (warrior priests). I guess it's pretty much what you did. I chose this approach for my Chaos Snakemen and thought it was nice.

I have to say the big dragon/frog would make a perfect centerpiece with a big slann and howdah on top.

I just can't stop smiling thinking about you 2 being the only ones actually bying slann models, leaving your local store every week with a full wheelbarrow of blisters and the staffers looking at each other with eyes wide open "he bought all the slanns (and goblins),...AGAIN"

@ OttoVonBismark:
That looks a fearsome Forgeworld Dinosaur. It seems suitably alien looking that it's ancestor may have been brought to the planet by the Old Slann. Perhaps a suitable alien looking colour scheme, grey-ish maybe? I plan to use my Ambulls as stand -in Giant Scorpions for the fun of it.

I have a book on frogs and toads, and it never ceases to amaze me with the colours and patterns. I have been painting up the Jungle Braves, Scouts, and Venom Tribes in exotic froggy colours.

I am loving looking at the progress of your army, and it is giving me ideas when I re-vist mine. Thantsants has had some great ideas too:

@Asslessman:
yes, that's about right in my case! The GW staff knew I would be buying Slann, and told me I was the only one really buying them. When they canncelled the range and had a sale, they keep back the Slann until I came in :)

You can pretty much blame Thantsants for enthusing me to get back to the old Slann army! He has lots of lovely Slann stuff on the site but I think my favorite's are the cold one cavalry with the Jaguar skin saddles, a very pimped up unit.

Hard to say what colour the Toad Dragon will end up at this time I tend not to think about the colours until I have the things undercoated in front of me. His final colour will be affected by the look of the rest of the force with their basing and so on but you never know he might end up grey in the end. He is definitely a job for the airbrush whatever colour he ends up!

Finally got inspired enough to commit to some colours on the mage/psyker. The cold one is based on the red-headed agama lizard. The cold one model looks simple but is a little on the tricky side to get it to look good - thats one of the reasons that I rate Thantsants cold one unit so highly. So it's like the opposite of a Bob Olley sculpt if you get what I mean. The saddle is one of the most awkward parts of it - what the hell is it supposed to be made of? Note how Thantsants resculpted his cold one saddles and skilfully avoided dealing with painting it.

In the end I decided it was probably made of some part of a lizard and opted to paint it a dark green - I think it works that way.

The base is from some Polish manufacturer. I picked it up on a visit to Warsaw. The white thing on the base is a tiny pewter "good luck" frog which my better half's mother gave me for some bizzare reason I can't remember - must be a Polish thing. I guess it's lucky that she gave it to a Slann fanatic  .

Looking good Seany! I look forward to "civilising" Kermit and his kin with bolter rounds and las-fire.

What colour is the shaman going to be? I love the guardian power glove :)

Splendid, I love the composition of the whole piece, really charcterfull. The lizard mount has a very good colour and with a mainly cold body colour, I believe it will offer a good contrats to any bright and warm paintscheme for the rider. Tasty !
