Theatralics Dwarf Army

I did it, its finished. There are some Parts I could improve on like the Shadows on the Mule or overall contrast, but for now I will call it finished. Sadly the Varnish I used left a rather glossy finish and it really angered me since it destroyed some of the weathered wooden look and swallowed Highlights, maybe I will get back with another matt varnish and try to tone it down.

All in all I am proud to have that lovely piece and happy about how it turned out.

C&C like allways more than welcome.

Lovely. You have a very nice style for painting toy soldiers. When you look at the group shot the colours and hilghlighting really come together to make something better than the sum of it's paintjobs. The constrained and carefully painted colour scheme choices coupled with the attention paid the heads and beards to really evoke the character of the sculpts really works well and the overall finish is excellent.

Thanks a lot for that indepth reply. Its really appreciated

I am happy that I achieved my Goal in your eyes. My aim is to paint an Army rather than individual Models. At the same time with these superb Sculpts you don`t want to lose all the Life they show in there Faces and all their character.
I didn`t want them to look like they wore some Kind of Uniform, for me those are every day Dwarves who picked up their Gear from under the Bed when they heard their Alarm Horn, kissed their Lady Goodbye and now eagerly await their enemy.
To be honest it allready does look more uniform than I wanted since I painted more Green than I had planned in the Beginning. I wanted more brown clothes in there, but realized that the Green works better.
But for an Tabletop Army its also important to get some kind of coherent Look going, otherwise its easy to make it look randomly thrown together and chaotic, especially with such a wild mix of Miniatures.
I am not the best painter and if you look at the Models you can see that they are painted in a rather basic way, all the more important to do a little more with their Faces and Beards to draw the viewer eye to their Head rather than their shoddy painted Boots.

I have still alot to learn but with every miniature I see some progress.

For the Miniature Mix I allways had this Picture before my eyes:

And i knew that I wanted warm, toned down, earthy colors:

The world is full of inspiration

Absolutely.

They look it.

Aye, the green works very well indeed. Too much brown would have clashed with the bases a little, the green colour is a very pleasing way to break up the browns.

The wilder the mix the more important the colour discipline becomes. A coherent look is probably the most important thing to consider in army painting. Yours looks coherent without suggesting that it's a uniform so you have definitely hit the target.

You don't have to be when you are good enough to get great results

For the painting of armies it is best to not be obsessive over micromanaging paint jobs (if you like to finish anytime soon). Being a "great painter" is not a good thing when it comes to painting armies as the tendency is towards spending way too long on insignificant details that can't be seen by the human eye from 2 foot away.

Hell yeah, we all are still learning! The more you paint the better you get, the better you get the more you paint....

Asterix meets snow white....cool. I like that colour scheme from Snow white - obviously it needs more of that green

Come to think of it, those Gauls would make an excellent Regiment of Renown!

Dreaded Photobucket :/. Switched to Imgur, no silly bandwidth limits there.

I finished another model, no Vintage Metal this Time but I allways liked Plastics if done well and this Guy looked like he could be finished in a reasonable amount of Time even by me.

Looks great. I note that you may be working in a high dust environment there. I have the same issue (the 4 cats don't help either).

Did you glue on the sand before undercoating? If you did it's a bad idea as the loose bits get picked up and spread on the model - it looks a little like that on the cape. This stuff tends to get picked up in photos rather than is noticeable when you are working on it.

I'm not much of a fan of the new Dwarfs but you've done a really nice job on this fellow :)

My two border collies shed hair like it's going out of fashion

Thank you gentleman, really appreciate you giving this a look! Your kind words are more than welcome.

@ Bismarck
Again you are spot on I tend to prime with sand allready glued on since it seals it, but you are right, never thought about it. Its not noticable on the mini, but those unforgiving pictures show it.
And i probably should vaccum more often   .
And speaking about cats:
jslj1zY.jpg

I don`t even try anymore to get him to fall in line, he knows I love him and that he can do anything he wants while I watch helplessly, he is a furry dictator  . Gives me those "Dude I am old, I could die any day, do you really wan`t to make my life miserable? And now feed me puny Human" Glares

@DB
On it good Sir, on it!

Seems to be a very common "problem". I often have to fight for my brushes and water.

And sleeping on Warhammer books, between paintbottles or just on top of some stuff is standard procedure... just have to love those furry Gits.

Indeed you have , mine had to go to the Vet yesterday because he jumped on my Gaming Table and threw down one Part of it and most of my Army, I was quiet angry and called him names, later that day I realized that he didn`t move right and seemed to have hurt himelf, I rushed to the Vet. Nothing dangerous but he needs to take pain medication for his leg.

I felt like *** and cursed at myself.

1) never ever again will i check up on Minis before making sure he is okay, he ran away when I started to fume so I didn`t actually think he did hurt himself, just his usual way of breaking my stuff. Could punch myself. He is 13 now and not the young jumping and running Kitten anymore.

2) As much as I love my Vintage models...I would give away all that stuff in an instant for him

They sometimes do things that make us yell at them, but as fast, we forget and forgive. Always a nigthmare when the cat is ill/injured, hope yours will get well soon.

My black cat (have a second, brown one too) recently slapped a Wood Elve eagle rider from the upmost board. And cats do very well know what and when the have done something wrong. But I got over it very fast

Now back to some stunties, my squigs need a snack.

Apologies for the Doublepost.

Even more Updates today. I finished Part of the Batchpainting Project i had going. I think they turned out nicely. I have to admit that I couldn`t be bothered anymore with all those Bags and Pouches in the end and stopped Highlighting them. Tedious!

In the Future I will go back to less Minis per Walkthrough. I am having trouble with the lighting in my Rooms so dthe Pics are rather Dark and colors are looking wrong. One of my Future projects will be a Photobox for sure. Still I hope you like them.

Let me know what you think

Have seen them on TTW, nice Bunch, but still a long way to avoid your beard gettin orange

I love the one with chainmail, spear and backpack, a real Dwarf adventurer.

Really nice. And knowing that some sculpting jobs are rather tricky to paint, I appreciate even more the final result! Any idea for the shields?

Thank you very much Lord Chaotl, glad that you like them....you old stinkin`Greenskin...;P

Oh man, Jaeckel in here , awesome!
Now I would like to hide them  . Thank you for your kind words, what you do with your Dwarves is simply stunning, although I try to get betterand learn new Things, the Level on yours is something I will never reach, its inhuman  .
I agree those Casts are harder to Paint then some would imagine. and sometimes they make me Rage. For Shields I am using plain old Roundshields with painted Patterns.

I fnished a Standard Bearer, I needed a break from all that Batch Painting I am more comfortable with less Minis per Batch, but at the same Time it slows everything down.

Now THAT is an army of which to be proud!

You have given the models so much character. This is yet another thread that makes me want to collect a new army! As if I didn't already have enough projects on the go!
