The Warband of Ngo Khan Do: Mourngul Renegades

Hobgoblins have had a special place in my heart since I unboxed the D&D basic set with Keep on the Borderlands.
I've picked up a mess of hobgob minis over the years & used several as mercs per Warhammer Armies, but I always wanted to set them up as an independent force.

Here is my attempt to flesh out the Warhammer Armies list & bring to life forces under the command of the low-down, no-good, back-stabbinest Hobgoblin Warlord; Ngo Khan Do.

This glorious cover from Ravening Hordes is the inspiration for my troops. I'd love this in a poster!

Test mini. Basing is inspired by some of the basalt hilltops near where I live & the volcanic, leeward sides of the Hawai'ian islands.

Classic Grizlock PiP from the Monster Starter Set. Color is off in this shot & I had to resculpt some of the face because it was badly smashed.

Some of the characters I plan to use. Left to right it's Agaroth the Unclean, Sukiyaki the Inscrutable, & a C36 that I'll fluff up some & use as a shaman. Although Agaroth is technically a Half-Orc & Sukiyaki is a Chaos Warrior, they just fit the theme! Sukiyaki from here on is Ngo Khan Do.

Mess of Hobyars. Elites with 2H weapons & troopers with basic weapons & shields.

Packmaster with an assortment of Hobhounds. I thought it would be fun to mix up the classic range with some of the grumpy Mordheim dogs & even have a 2-headed chaos hound I plan to use. Some sculpting & paint should pull them all together.

This was just too good to pass up. Rackham's Dai Bakemonos are about the most insane oriental ogre models ever! I had to have them included in the force & have 4 more besides this one in the hopper for paint.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that this weekend has some painting time built into it. :)

A wonderfully unique and interesting army...I love it! I have no Hobos in my collection but this may encourage me to track some down.

Cant wait to see some with paint on...

Cheers,

Blue

Lovely stuff, the test model looks great. I'm a huge fan of the early Hobgoblins (both Morrison and Lund).

The Chris Achilleos painting "Orc Charge" is available as an Art Print on his site, quite pricey, see here but probably worth it in terms of quality. It also appears without any typography (just the image) in the A4 version of Out of the Pit: Fighting Fantasy Monsters by Marc Gascoigne as a full A4 page.

Also Agaroth the Unwashed concept art was done by top old school artist Trevor Hammond (see here). Any chance I could get a solo photo of Agaroth to put up on his blog?

Lovely stuff - those Rackham Ogres are great. I was thinking my Jes Goodwin Oriental Ogre was going to be a bit lonely by himself...

Nice idea with the Chaos Warrior for Ngo Khan Do 8-)

Are you planning any cavalry - always thought a Steppe based army raised from nomadic tribes should have hordes of horse or wolf cavalry. I thought about some of the Chronicle Orc Wolfriders but their faces would need some work to make them more Hobgoblin-y.

That would be these guys. I'll be re-wolfing the group with the new Fenrisian Wolves though. I can't stand the 4th ed. "Plush Puppy" wolves & Kev Adams wolves run too small. Lund wolves are good, but hard to get. The 4th ed. Hobgobs are losing the big hats too!

I'm with you on the nomadic tribes thing. I have a mess of stripped O&G stuff from yesteryear to craft into wains & crew. Someone has to carry the food & BBQs! :)

Never really thought much of those 4th ed Hobgobs but I do quite like the Oglah Khan minis for some reason - even better sans big hats!

I've go a load of the later Marauder Goblin wolf riders I'm looking for mounts for becaue I can't stand the plush puppies either! Phreedh's Blue Moon wolves look great and seem a decent size for gobbos anyway.

That looks a nice pile of lead to make a baggage train - you'll be needing some captured prisoners/slaves/food chained together in single file as well I reckon

Arhh this army will be stunning to look at, massive fan of Hobbos and 4th/5th Ed Hobbos Wolfboys are some of my fav sculpts. I just had to change out the Wolfs for Chaos Hounds.

Finished Grizlock.

Going to try something rash & paint two at once next & switch up my technique a bit. I travel about 70% of the time for work, so this is really pushing the limits. ;)

Test base for my Hideous Half-Orc Mercenaries.

No vegetation yet, but it should be pretty easy to get dead grass, rodent scat, & other suitable bits mixed in.

This isn't something I'd ever envisaged typing but that cracked earth/dried up mud looks fantastic!

Its going to look great with some dead grass, general detritus and a Half Orc on top of it.

Adding to my basing experiment:

Clan ever so slowly growing. Like the movement of a glacier, but in slow motion..
