The Sett

I thought I'd best finally get around to putting some bits up from my collection and ongoing projects. I'll have a dig back through some older things too.

Someone mentioned an event at BOYL where they'd like people to bring along two units of 10 troops plus a character. I'm hoping to go (getting nervous that there's no sign of a date yet - hopefully it's happening?). So BOYL has given me a bit of a focus, rather than just scatter gunning models at random. I'm aiming for 10 dwarf spears and ten quarrelers, plus Helga Longplaits is likely to be my character. If I can, I'll try to do 10 2-handed dwarfs too, as I really like the models. Ultimately I plan to add loads more. In 4th edition I used to run the spears as a block of 20 for the rank bonus, but reading the 3rd edition rules I may go for 24, as the extra file would gain an additional attack from the second rank.

The spears are progressing the swiftest, as I had a few done already. I think Yobby and his halberd may be evicted to the double-handed unit, and I'll replace him with a musician (if anyone knows of a musician with a spear, let me know, else it'll be a generic drummer). The primed white pike in the back will be swapped for another more fitting spear, but he'll be back with his mates when I get to the 3rd and 4th ranks.

The crossbows are a bit behind, with just the leader and the two muffle brothers there. Some say they hide their chins because they're really beardless halflings, but I think it's because they're so lustrously bearded that they can't risk damaging their face fur in battle!

Thanks to a purchase from @Michael Stockin I've had a major movement tray upgrade from the hasty "card and bamboo skewer" jobs I made for my game with my daughter. I've sandwiched metallic sheet on there and started playing with magnets. They'll get flocked and planted too.

Having a goal for BOYL is really helping motivation and a coherent plan 🙂

Tips and constructive criticism very much welcomed!

If you only want the lip/top layer to stick on a magnetic sheet, I can do that.
Thanks - these sheets are really flexible, but heavy/dense and have a self-adhesive back, so the base board is ideal. I'll definitely be back for more and more sizes too.

I went with a magnetic but not magnetised sheet, as I thought that would help avoid the need to worry about the polarity of the magnets in the model bases. I had lots of 'fun' attaching the magnets to the bases. I put two little magnets under each base and it appears they share something in common with buttered toast. When they fly off to stick to each other, they always land super glue side down! Then when you try to separate them with a craft knife, you remember that the knife blade is steel.. lots of fun! 🤣

Absolutely happening. Just nailing down the dates as I understand it is all a little ephemeral at present. Diane Ansell sold Stoke Hall after Bryan died and so the plan is that Foundry relocate. As I understand it that plan has kinda been ongoing for some time now. I don't know if they have a new place in mind or if they are still hunting for something suitable, would it be ready in time for the provisional/expected dates, etc. Alas lots of unknowns, but hopefully things will firm up over the next few weeks.

Totally agree with you on having a goal. One of the chaps I met today who lives not far from me was thinking about finishing up some Necromunda models this year. So I suggested we perhaps try for a game over the summer. I have my old Van Saar gang that I half painted and it'd be nice to get that finished, he's got terrain and I've got my gaming room office. Having an actual aim in mind has really got me thinking about tackling those minis and finishing the squad up.

I always mark my magnets so I get them round the right way and I've one "spare" magnet stuck to a bit of labelled wood so I make sure the polarity of all my models is the same. Annoyingly that's different to the polarity of the trees I did on one gaming board - so if a model wanders too close to a tree mounting point they do get sent flying...

Dwarves are looking good!

I've been having a rummage in the vaults and found the Bloodaxes from the 750pt army I put together to play a game in a Games Workshop store when I was 16.

There were some of my first forays into conversion, with Borgash Wolfstomper the Komnmando Kaptin with his Storm shield stolen from a Space Wolf terminator in one of my games against a friend. With his spike arm, mega armour and power claw he packed quite a punch for his points cost. The Boyz have had a few bits added to them like a horse tail hair squig and what looks to be an axe from a hero quest fimir.

Taking 100 points of pulsa rokkits in a 750pt game seems like a bit of a gamble, but I loved the chaos, and when they worked well, they were exceptional. I really can't recall the outcome of the game though (some 30 years later!)

And my finest homebrew creation, the gretchin rattlegun - carried by a gretchin champion, it was essentially an auto gun with sustained fire dice. I can't remember if it was one or two. I seem to remember toying with the idea of it being either 1 or 2, but if you picked 2, it ran out of ammo on a 6 or something, as well as the risk of a double jam blowing it up? I was trying to make something fun and fitting but not overpowered like so much teenage homebrew ended up.

Hopefully I've got a bit better at painting since then, but really I think those were the last things I painted really, before a thirty year break!

Hope they're of interest - amazing what you could field for 750 points (no shokk attack gun though ☹️)

Are you tempted to give them a glow up?

My FLFS owners have dug out some old 40k minis (Waargh/Codex era orcs and some Praetorian Guard) and asked if I was interested in joining in some games of 2nd Ed. Would be fun to touch up and rebase some of my old painted marines!

I'm not overly tempted. There's a few where I clearly ran out of time to get details on, like Kommandos without face paint, but I've got so many other things to paint, and I quite like the nostalgia of them really. The gretchin could get some greenstuff and a paint job though!

I was on Reddit a while ago and someone asked what apps are available to track armies and points etc.

THIS IS ALL YOU NEED:

BLOOMIN APP INDEED.

Pulsa rokkits were very effective if memory serves. I think they were the sort of thing singled out for removal in 3rd edition.
They were proper Orky - totally unreliable with the potential to do great things or nothing at all. To see how far they went you basically chose a number of D6's to roll, then their blast marker was 2D6 inches. On a double they kept going and you could roll again the next turn. Infantry they just knocked over for a turn, but they were devastating on dreadnought legs and sent vehicles out of control. As Orks usually got first turn, making a good chunk of the enemy miss their first turn often meant you could get up close and personal before they could react. I still remember managing to drop one bang in the middle of a space wolf army and rolled a double 6 for blast radius - good times!
