The final Jes Goodwin Ogre

Bane

Vassal
Been a while since I've posted any of my painting on here, mostly it goes onto my blog. But I'd like to share my latest piece, a Jez Goodwin Ogre. It's a fantastic model and to me epitomises my favourite era of GW miniatures - and it's therefore taken me some courage to paint:

I could not resist giving him some stripey pyjama bottoms and a matching bicep bracelet, he's obviously slightly vain. For the skin I've used multiple washes of Reikland red over a white base and then highlighted up. Considering he's a mercanary and will also turn up during the odd game of Heroquest, I've given him a range of bases to fit into other armies/systems and used magnets so he can appear on an appropriate base:

Re: A Jez Goodwin Ogre

Very nice! And I love the pants , so much!
All those ogres are awesome , but this is one of my top too.
Someday I'll need to start painting mines ... :?

Re: A Jez Goodwin Ogre

Cheers guys. There's a couple of reasons I like this particular ogre so much; the hint of chaos with the protruding forehead horn; the movement of the flail suggesting just how much pain it can distribute and the long toes sticking out if his boots for a bit of comedy.

Detail and dynamism, the hallmarks of GW's golden era.

Re: AW: A Jez Goodwin Ogre

A great selection of colours.
A daring selection but the result is really nice.

Very nice - how did you do the rust on the chain there?
I like his toe peeping out.

It's actually a pretty quick recipe:
1. boltgun metal
2. chestnut ink/black ink wash
3. highlight with chainmail
4. mix a red oxide dry pigment with a touch of matt acrylic medium and dab on

That's it!

I've primed my next ogre - it's the "Bandit Ogre", more to follow.

Re: Another Jez Goodwin Ogre

Great paint jobs, down to the detail like the cowhide shin guards/leg warmers. Interesting technique for the skin, wouldn't have thought that worked on such large areas, but I really like the result.

Re: Another Jez Goodwin Ogre

Great paint job on both. Could you just tell my what you use for your woodland/grass bases as I'm looking for inspiration for my elves.

I've got quite a detailed tutorial on my blog: http://thelostandtheverydamned.blogspot ... guide.html rather than repeat it here. I've also added a snow/ice one too if anyone is interested:

Cheers. The skin technique is relatively quick and easy too, now that I have got it down. I've got another 4 of these amazing Ogres lined up in the queue, one is halfway through painting and a further two primed. Always optimistic that I'll get them painted sooner rahter than later (or before another mini-project jumps the queue).

Re: Another Jez Goodwin Ogre

Really nice work! Love those Jes Goodwin Ogres. I really like the way you use natural materials for your bases, I think I'd like to try something like that.

Re: Another Jez Goodwin Ogre

@Bane: Thanks that tutorial is perfect for my needs and the idea to use paint with the PVA is genius and a great way to tweak the colour.

Re: Another Jez Goodwin Ogre

Here's the 3rd of my Mercanary Ogres, a quietly calm and calculating model, waiting patiently for his foe with his axe rested on top of his foot. Possibly a slightly earlier sculpt in the oeuvre of Goodwin's collection as the model doesn't seem quite as coherent and crisp as the previous two ogres I've painted, but still a joy. I like the way he is cupping a skull in his right hand, the overall pose and of course the ubiquitous 80's underbite.

I've continued to use a range of colours and patterns to help bring the fella to life, this time going for a black and white check halved with orange and blue stripes;

Here he is with his two buddies, looking to fight and pillage for a tidy sum:

Next up is the excellent "thug" ogre with his slightly raised left hobnailed foot, which I still think is quite a unique and distinctive pose amongst miniatures. I've decided to go for a bit of a green theme for him...:

Re: Another Jez Goodwin Ogre

Nice, saw these on your blog last night.

Really fun colours on their clothes. I know I have a habit of just leaving sections like that flat colours (or boring brown!) so I might have to keep it in mind.

Cheers, it does make painting the clothing more fun (and more challenging) but it's certainly better than painting more and more brown leather....

So here's the 4th member of the contingent, the classic "Thug Ogre" with his unique pose of hobnailed boot lifted from the heal and his mace positioned forwards at the end of a swing. I've seen this pose interpreted in many ways; with a fence being flattened, an adversary being squashed being two of many. I haven't added anything to the dialogue of the model's pose, but have added some bags of loot on the base, with gold coins cascading into the grass - I see this fellow as guarding a recent hoard of gold coins:

I went for a green pallette to offset a slightly red skin and the orange of the rust areas, and in this case decided against any patterns, just focusing on the colour choices.

You can see the bags and coins a bit clearer here:

And the four of them together, which means I can also cross another entry from my LatD retinue table challenge off the list: D4 ogres done!

But fear not these Ogres are not finished, I have two more ogres to add, the first will be the infamous mercanary contingent commander, followed by the shaman ogre who I've converted into the contingent's standard bearer

Many thanks for looking!

Re: Another Jez Goodwin Ogre

Thanks guys, great to hear that this is inspiring you. I've completed my 5th member of the mercanary unit - a converted standard bearer:

Sogrodd's Mercanaries - aka the Rusty Flails.

Sogrodd aka "The Thug", leads his band of Mercanaries, for hire, to any willing Army General, for a good fee (an even greater amount of gold is demanded if that General happens to be a greenskin though).

When these renowned fighters appear on the battlefield, they simultaneously causes fear amongst the enemy rank and file and at the same time a glimmer of hope for the opposing General. If he has enough gold, he knows there is always a chance that Sogrodd will change allegiance and attack his original employers (as famously happened at the Battle of Skull Pass). This band are quite simply led to battle by the fight as much as the temptation of a big hoard of treasure and gold.

Below is Ang'thra'olyg the ageing standard bearer of the band and in past times, it's original leader. No longer the fearsome warrior he once was, he now seems to bring a great deal of luck to the warband, hence why he is entrusted with the banner. Ang'thra'olyg believes in his own luck too; eschewing armour for manoueverability, he still remains largely uninjured, even though he likes to entice the opposition to attack him with vile gestures and base language:

Adorned with his lucky charms of a flower of broccoli, a goblin skull, cockatrice feathers and a duck's foot.

I had a lot of fun painting this Ogre, as usual it is a very crisp and characterful sculpt from Mr. Goodwin, which makes it easy to create the character of the model and how he fits into the warband. I especially like the characterful details of what he carries into battle, including some broccoli, feathers and on his back a duck's foot!

Obviously this is a very simple conversion with his weapon clipped away, a hole drilled through his hand and a thick paper clip inserted to create the banner pole. This was then covered in greenstuff and roughly sculpted to look like wood. From my bitzbox a spare LotR troll hand was then combined with an (Giant of Albion?) axe for the top of the banner.

The banner itself was created by freehand onto a piece of paper (except the dry transfer letters) and then the entire banner was distressed with some blood and mud spatters before being ripped at the edges. To stiffen the paper it was coated in dilute PVA and then matt varnish applied.

And here are the five of them ready for action (sans the unfinished movement tray):

Sogrodd is about to be usurped though as leader, a new contingency commander, a level 20 ogre, no less is about to take control of the band..... Work on him is underway, pink trousers and all..

Re: Another Jez Goodwin Ogre

A really impressive unit, just a shame you couldn't of found a bigger banner ! Will look forward to the pink trousered boss.
