The Composer's Own Marines

Since my first armies were all marine armies, it seems appropriate that I might start by showing off my marines . . .

My friends and I divied up chapters. I had to pick third, since they bought the book before I did, and thus ended up with the Space Wolves. (Ben was Dark Angels and Ultramarines. His brother Mike was Blood Angels and . . . Blood Drinkers, maybe? I was wolfies and . . . something. Don't even remember what. Rainbow Warriors? Probably not.) (NB: I believe my final chapter was the Crimson Fists, which actually works out, now that I see it from thirty years later.)

This was the final incarnation of my space wolves . . .

I also collected Grey Knights, though I had no idea at the time they were special and distinct from the marines in any appreciable way. (Let call this my inquisition collection. Almost, but not quite marines.) . . .

Later I started two other chapters. I started my own Crimson Dragons . . .

The next installment of this tour de forces can be found at Symphonic Squigpipes and Other Orkish Assaults.

It's late and I'm doubtless missing something, but I think that will be enough lead poisoning for now. If you get to this before I update, I keep a blog called Poetry of the Symphonic. Thank you for tolerating my little adventure.

Sincerely,
The Composer.

I appreciate the fact those remind us Space wolves can actually look good !

Your crimson dragons are my favourite chapter of yours, they're like an embodiment of rogue trader marines to me, the colours, the patterns, everything is just right.

I'm happily following your blog now !

This stuff is great, but even Space marines riding wolves still doesn't work for me, not even when they are so awesome and old-school as your Space Wolfs.

Thank you all. I appreciate the warm reception. Especially knowing the quality of work around here.

^Asslessman,

The Crimson Dragons are my favorites of the marine chapters too, as it happens. Though I'm quite fond of the old Crimson Fists as well. I'm especially happy you like the Space Wolves, as I worry sometimes that they're a bit over the top. (And then I look at what's out there now and go . . . Geeze?! I thought mine were too much? Holy cow!)

^Jonas,

They don't really work for me anymore either. I keep them out of a sense of nostalgia. I was maybe nineteen when I made those. It was early days. The current leader is my own version of Logan Grimnar . . .

. . . but even he is a bit too much for me now. I played along with the expansion for a little while, but in the end I went back to the earlier aesthetic. (Which is what the Crimson Dragons were meant to be.) The Space Wolves are primarily early 90s vintage. The Crimson Dragons and Crimson Fists are mostly late 90s. I think the Grey Knights and Daemon Hunters (whom I use as members of the High Lords of Terra) were repainted in the mid 2000s. The inquisitors are older and need a dip and strip, I think.

^Graf von Bruno,

The gargantuar mecha thing is a vinyl ED-209 model converted to be a small imperial titan. If you'd care to know more about it or see more of it, I have a post about it specifically over on my blog called Grim Dark Titans of the Vintage Future! Now with More Ed! I show the rather aged model, warts and all, and explain where I found some of the bits that went into it. (Sponge painting? Really? Okay, it was fast and covered a large surface in a somewhat weathered way that doesn't look brushy. Maybe it's not so bad.)

Again, thank you all. More to follow.

An update:

Lord Geri is now dismounted, along with his wizard and his cleric.

I may leave the standard bearer mounted for old time's sake, but I suspect tech guru will be kicked out of the army entirely.
