Sunburst yellow

hi there, I'm hoping for some advice on paint. I have some cote d' arms sun yellow which, from what I understand, should be an analogue for citadel's sunburst yellow. Its yer transparent which hasn't been a problem with painting my space marines so far, but when I've come to basing the goblin green drybrushed with sunburst yellow suggested in my old citadel miniatures painting guide seems to give different results to sun yellow. Has anyone used the old citadel paint set sunburst yellow that can advise on the relative transparency of cote d' arms sun yellow? Or should I continue to drybrush further cotes of sun yellow? Or give the bases a drybrush of white / bone then a drybruah of sun yellow over that?

Are you using the foundry base, mid tone, or highlight for their sun yellow?

I use foundry paints often, but not sun yellow.

I have used foundry’s ochre triad and lemon triad (none of these match sunburst yellow)

I do find some of the mid tones or highlight foundry yellows to be more transparent than sunburst yellow; which I have and continue to use.

All of which is to say, I haven’t used that particular foundry paint but suggest dry brushing more coats of it

I remember the original citadel Sunburst Yellow being almost completely transparent and having to layer it on loads to get coverage, and impossible to cover or highlight darker colours with it.

Suggest dry-brushing a green-white mix then paining over with yellow, like a glaze.

Also IIRC the 'eavy Metal team back in the day didn't use Citadel paints half the time, and the painting guides were just made up.

Thanks for your replies guys.

Hilarious and believable!

I think you are right Zhu, the Cote d' Arms paints are meant to be the same formulations that HMG manufactured for the citadel paint sets and this sun yellow is seriously transparent, like painting with a weirdly thick glaze... Nice colour over the white base coat, but my days I had to be tidy with the marines' shoulder pad trim. On the bases I'll try a bone/goblin green drybrush with sun yellow over the top and see how that comes out.

Thanks for your help on foundry paints too, Orjetax, it sounds like their range might be a bit more forgiving.

It seems I completely misread your original post!

I somehow thought you were asking about foundry not cote d’arms.

But maybe I have accidentally given decent perspective as yes, Foundry IS more forgiving than CDA. I tried some CDA and found it far too transparent and watery for my liking

I mainly paint with Reaper paints, but yellow tones, especially the light ones, have usually a inferior coverage. I found out, that a tiny amount of orange, mixed in the yellow, improves the coverage without noticeably changing the yellow tone. The tip of a fine brush with orange in a drop of yellow is enough to achieve a better result.

By the way: the highlights on the dwarf's base doesn't look yellow to my eye. Seems more like a light olive tone. Maybe a mix of Goblin Green with Skull White, or pure Rotting Flesh.

Just to confirm, I used to wander past the painter's desks occasionally, this is 100% true. I seem to recall that Tamiya's acrylics were first released in the mid 80s, so they got popular for a while, but obviously every painter was individual and used whatever they wanted to, though there was a lot of Citadel in there as it was free, lol.
