Space Crusade Chaos Dreadnought Conversion Information

Hi, I can vaguely remember seeing a picture of a conversion of one of the Space Crusade dreadnoughts - the ones that have a bit of a resemblance to ED-209 from Robocop. As I remember, it was converted to an orc dreadnought of some sort and I think the creator used a drink can to make the head/mouth? I almost certainly would have seen it in a White Dwarf; does anyone know what it is I am thinking of? I have tried to find a picture of it using web search but have had no luck. Any help trying to find an image would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Sorry that's obviously useful information for me to provide! I think it would have been early to mid nineties, I'm guessing 1992-1994 but I can't really remember.

If you don't mind, I'm gonna ask something which should be very stupid BUT.

Are you sure you aren't getting confused with the original Orc Dreadnought? I don't think you are but apart from the length of the main body, I can see how a mis-remembered version of one can get confused with a converted SC Dreadnought.

like I said, I'm pretty sure I'm wrong BUT It's a "When you have eliminated the impossible" things.

I don't think so, but it's entirely possible I've muddled some things. The fact I've not managed to find a trace of it leads me to think I'm getting mixed up somewhere.

Thanks for the replies!

None of this rings a bell. There were some custom Adi Wood Ork Dreadnoughts in White Dwarf. One was built around a fantasy catapult if I remember correctly.

Unrelated, but a mate mounted one of the RT7 Dreadnoughts on those Space Crusade dread legs. There was a brief period where all the Space Crusade stuff was going out of production & could be picked up for peanuts.

I've been completely unable to find any pictures of this conversion - I even managed to find some of my White Dwarf copies from the early to mid 90s but haven't found the picture in any of the issues I found. Could be in another lost one somewhere else though...

Anyway, I've been working on a conversion based on the one in my head (whether it existed or not). I am at a stage where I have primed the model to see where I needed to smooth/refine more and have just added a bit more Milliput on top. One of the teeth is Blu-tac'd on so I can take it off to paint inside the mouth, and the arms are just currently push-fitted in with dowels. Also working on a chopped up space marine to add to the base, which is why that is in the picture! Does this jog anyone's memory?

Looking good. Got one I'm cleaning up myself to paint at some point. No serious conversion work planed however.
Nice, would love to see it! I painted very little from my Space Crusade set and never painted any of the dreadnoughts. I had the Mission Dreadnought expansion so have a couple more I think - I really want to get around to painting at least one of those as well!

I'm wondering about trying to do a marble effect on the main upper armour panels, but I've not really got any chaos 40k stuff done so don't have a theme or anything in mind. I have clipped away the base mine came on so I can mount it more like my other models and I've filled up some of the gaps the push fit design leaves visible, along with drilling out the weapon barrels.

Is that a plastic Titan arm I spot for the models right arm?

Yes, there's part of a titan arm in there that was left over from my Banelord!

and thank you @orkwrangler ! If that is indeed the right one, that that image with the name was all I needed

White Dwarf #196 - April 1996
