Some advice on Skirmish/rpg rules please

Hello, I'm busy painting my 3rd edition empire army, but I'm already looking ahead to my next project.
Essentially I want a skirmish game with a roleplay element and a vested interest in the characters/models used.
The project will include this old dungeon
Planner set as the background

Asgard miniatures barbarian band.
Into the Marsh to fight orcs and chaos snakemen.
a good excuse to paint up some different classic miniatures.
I might even build the village and start it there (although the old map has a tonnes of nostalgic charm), from then on a set of choices on routes through the marshes with encounters.

I own these:
Warhammer fantasy 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th editions
Mordheim (untouched, on a shelf!)
Warhammer fantasy roleplay 1st and 2nd editions (pretty much complete)
Various early D&D editions
Advanced fighting fantasy (no idea what this is like but I liked the books so I got the lot)

Mordheim seems the obvious choice
Although it's all a bit new to me and I have never played it.

Cheers, Ben

maybe "The Wood" which has RPG, Skirmish or Battle modes/options, Advanced Hero Quest. Though if you already own them, WFRP seams fair enough.

Advanced hero quest is a great idea, I will look into that.
I will also check out The wood.
WFRP is one of my favourite systems (1st and 2nd) but it's a bit slow on the combat side.

As you’re already familiar with WFB, I’d use Mordheim. You’d also need the Mordheim Annual and the Empire in Flames supplement. Both are available, free of charge, from the Broheim website.

FYI, the Annual contains the Orcs & Goblins warband and EiF includes additional rules for Mordheim in the countryside. FWIW, there are no Mordheim rules for snakemen, but it’s easy enough to port the stats over from WFB. You might need to tone the stats down for some critters as Mordheim doesn’t feature tons of hero level characters and magical items.

Whilst I've not (yet) played it Mordheim is very popular in the local gaming groups near me and I've always heard good things about it.

Being a massive WFRP 1st Edition fan that is always a solid choice even when miniatures are involved, but much as I love it I'd probably err more towards a system designed for miniatures from the outset.

Advanced Fighting Fantasy is a decent RPG - very much themed as if the GM is directing a movie, but I'm not sure it would lend itself to miniature skirmish that well. I don't recall us ever using miniatures when we were playing it (many many years ago).

The Frostgrave ruleset is nice and simple and there isn't anything that really binds it tightly to it's own frosty world. I've enjoyed a few games, but the campaign aspects are fairly simple (think more like Necromunda).

That all said I'd break out Mordheim I think since you have it and from my understanding if you know any WFB you'll have a solid start! If you don't think it has enough RPG/Campaign stuff then I'd use WFRP (although I guess you could swap out the combat system if you don't mind putting in a bit more DIY work)

Whatever you end up choosing I hope you'll keep us supplied with updates!

ManicMan has already given my quarter- The Woods. It was designed specifically for narrative-heavy skirmishing.
Stats wise though you might find Mordheim is an easier crossover. Maybe just try 1st edition WFB as that was more a skirmishes on the tabletop supplement for DnD.

Last night I read through the advanced heroquest rules and add ons, I now want to track down a copy as it looks fun, but it's not right for what I have in mind.

Mordheim feels like this huge beast that is loved by thousands, I'm just not ready to jump into that rabbit hole just yet, because I know what I'm like and if I'm in, I'm all in and I will be poor, very poor.

I will check out the other recommended games but tonight I'm reading my old WFB 1st edition. It's from the same time as the source material and also the miniatures I intend to use. The dungeon planner set 1 has it on the back.1000005920.jpg
I found this ancient ad&d flyer in the caverns of the dead box as well
