Slottabases, and their dates?

It was so you could fit lots of them onto the back of the Ork Trukks.

Edit: Doh! Just seen that this has been answered.

Another one for you slotta base freaks! =) Or two, really...

Blood Bowl bases! They came in different colours, based on position (red for blitzer, green for blocker, white for thrower, grey for lineman and yellow for catchers). However, there was also the smaller grey base on which a coloured ring was snapped on. There are no markings on them (neither GW copyright, nor serial markings in any way).

If anyone want ring bases I have some for trade. ;)

I have a number of those old round bases for holding up card pieces if anyones interested  I'll trade them for Slann or Amazons.

I found one of those in my base pile, I think they go either with my 1st Edition Bloodbowl or 2nd Edition Talisman. Will have to check, they might hve with some other games.

Advanced Heroquest has colours for the heroes too (red green blue?) and grey for the skaven IIRC.

Huh, in my copy the heroes were all gray and the skaven and henchmen were all tan.

I got some of those ring bases with my Space Hulk Termies back in the early 2000s, wondered what the rings were for, now I know!

You are all a bunch of nutters!

I'm with DaImp. It's both scary and somehow good to know that this thread is on its third page!

what is scary is that it is still on topic too.. Normally we go off on a random tangent about something someone mentions.

Back to Base-ics (I did go there).. Don't forget about the huge selection of epic bases too I still have all my epic on the square bases (do they have numbers hmm must check) and have to hunt down more when I get more epic as I loath the change to long bases they did...

Weird.

I just checked earlier, in my box, hero bases are green, henchmen are grey and skaven are black. Didn't check ident numbers (yet  ).

I've been digging through my bags of spare Citadel bases and discovered the following:

Hexagonal base - All undated but numbered 1 to 14.

Original 20mm Square Slotta base- Dated 1984. I've got these both in black and grey. It seems to have lost it's second slot, the one you cut out, in 1995 where it only has one diagonal slot. This is also the year that the horizontal slot 20mm bases came out, dated 1995.

Original 25mm Square Slotta base - Dated 1984. I've got a load of them that are undated but have numbers on them from 1 to 14. I've also got one dated 1991.

Original 40x40mm base - Undated but numbered 1 to 8. They probably go higher than 8 but I don't own any.

Original Cavalry base (no slots)- Undated. No numbers. The only dated ones I've got are 1998 which are slotted.

Original square Space Marine base - Dated 1989, which makes sense given when Space Marine was released.

Hope it's ok to resurrect an old thread, but Citadel bases are prominent in my collection, regardless of which company sculpted the models in question. Oh, and by the way, I'm new here; hello!

If you ask me, (as a mold-maker,) I'm betting those numbers refer to the cavities in the mold that produced those plastic bases. In other words, each mold usually has multiple cavities, often a power of two. This is helpful in determining where in the tooling the problem may lie when a part comes out flawed, such as in the case of a "short-shot," where the part (in this case, the base,) is truncated, or incomplete. In all likelihood, they're otherwise functionally, (if not completely,) identical.

Now, to the question of bases, their shapes, colors, and dates:
Much of my colection dates from the 80's, and there have been several colors of slotta-base: Not only black, and gray, but also green have been produced. I've only seen the 20mm square in these other colors.

Being a fan of GURPS, I've taken to mounting many of my models on hex-bases, (mostly non-fantasy,) even when they're not slotted. I actually print custom hex-bases with recessed surfaces for mounting integral-based minis into. Actually, I print bases of all shapes and sizes. I may post them all of Thingiverse if anybody's interested.

Ask me anything about molding or printing bases.

Cheers-

Speaking of slotta bases... do you remember the useless bases supplied with Gorka Morka? Impossible to balance a metal nob on those!

I wasn't aware of those until only the other day when I saw a sprue on Ebay. They looked more like melted round bases. Bloody useless looking things.

What was the point in the odd shape?

They were shaped that way so you could fit lots of models onto the trucks.

You're probably right about that. There's also some call for bases like this if a collector wants to unify his collection of slotted models with his those of the integral-base variety. I started out this way, but soon switched sides and started putting everything on a plastic base for consistency.

I have no idea what came from where, but I've got 20mm square bases in black, grey, green, and a medium brown. 25mm rounds in black, grey, and dark blue -- I think some were from Bloodbowl/Dungeonbowl.

Also, some of my older plastic bases have turned fairly brittle. Anyone else notice that?
