Looking back at the original conversion I am pretty sure that rope is just twisted wire. Thicker grade than what you have used and probably copper as that's easiest to bend to shape. You can cut a length, double it over and grip one end in a cordless drill chuck, the other in some pliers (wear goggles!) then gently press the trigger to wind into as tight a braid as you want.

Agreed. That really is a lovely conversion. The splice in the scroll adds character. You could add some stitches, or paper staples with a bit more green stuff if you wanted, to make the join look more intentional. And a simple, crude bowl looks great. If you're finding iron or steel too hard to work with and copper too soft, you might try brass. I find it's a nice, happy medium. (It's a little less common than copper, since it's not in every broken electrical thing, but jewelry shops should have some, and might even have scrap lying around. Or if there's a music school nearby with some historical keyboard instruments. Get to know the tuner. They'll have scrap brass wire in alarmingly small diameters. (And scrap iron wire in even smaller diameters.)
