Sci-Fi sculpts

Over the years Ive learned a lot about metal & resin casting. Primarily because casters had to frequently explain to me why something wouldnt work

General rule for metal casting - single piece metal pieces generally have to be on one plane (flatter the better) no large undercuts and no large spikes or appendages sticking out in numerous directions. Look at the early Citadel pieces from the 80s generally all relatively flat plane. If a mini has lots of appendages in different directions then likely will need to be multi-part. This is what happened to Citadel when they tried to produce more complex metal miniatures that werent as flat planed as their early pieces

Resin is more forgiving and allows more complex sculpts with spikes and appendages in numerous directions to be cast as one piece. I have recently had some miniatures rejected in metal as they had too large undercuts and so they have had to go for resin casting. They will eventually appear in this thread or the Fantasy one I will try to point out them when they are posted

I have jumped around a bit from metal to resin and back and forth and it hasnt necessarily been related to them not being able to be cast in metal. Metal was quite cheap 10 years ago and resin was a little dearer. Then resin became cheaper for awhile, then they were both around the same price (so I went back to metal) now metal is quite expensive but equally so is resin imo. I am really making choices now based on their suitability for metal or resin and taking it from there

Cast in resin

This is the last Judge I have produced. I did plan some more but put them on the backburner. Maybe I will revisit them again soon
