RT: Sustained Fire vs Following Fire?

Orjetax

Lord
I see the entry for following fire in the RT rule book (which seems way too strong, by the way).

But I also have some cardstock rules summaries (source unknown, but looks RT era) that list some hEavy weapons as having "sustained fire." Which I don't see in RT.

So . . . What's sustained fire?

Heavy Plasma has Sustained Fire or Maximal Fire in RT, I think it's the only weapon that has that option, maximal does more damage but has to wait 3 turns before it can be used again ie. can only be fired again on the fourth turn after being fired. In this instance "sustained fire" is normal, one shot per turn (with Following Fire).

Following Fire, means for each hit, you can have another shot at a figure within 4" (imagine it's like spraying an area with machine gun fire), and can have a devastating effect. However, most weapons that use it need a whole turn or more to recharge, which kind of balances out the damage capabilities.

Thanks Zhu, much appreciated.

CVB - nope, not highlighted in blue. I remember the 2d Ed card stock summaries . . . This is something different. I'll take a picture and post here later I suppose. I am curious of the origin.

The book of the astronomicon had a paper reference sheet that was blue but I dont remember a card one.
Rogue Trader near the end had a few books released that basically turned it into 2nd edition so it may have come from one of those.

Post a pic and I am sure we can ID it for you.

The Battle Manual for RT made rules changes and changed the term to Sustained Fire.

If you want, I can post the rules differences.

Yeah, RQ, I'd love to see those differences.

If you posted, I'd be much obliged.

And everyone else - I'll post these card sheets so we can identify.

I wonder whether they might come from the Battle Manual in fact . . .

First things first:

Following Fire (as per RT rulebook).
If the attack hits and wounds (even if it's saved by armour), you get another shot at the same target or another target within 4".

Sustained Fire (battle manual)
As following fire with the following differences:

All subsequent shots are either at -1 to hit (switch to new target) or +1 to hit (repeat shots against the same target).
Rolling a 1 to hit on any subsequent shots jams the weapon.

If it says Sustained Fire and does not specify a number of dice, its Rogue Trader post Battle Manual.

2nd edition sources will say something like "Sustained Fire 2 dice" or similar.

This help?

Yes RQ, sure does!

By the way - here are the mysterious card sheets I referred to. They have rules on front and back, except the armor pen chart, which has a pretty sweet illustration on reverse.

Anyone know where these came from?

yeah, that also has the Rogue Trader scatter rules from the Battle Manual. At this point, the game was really close to basically becoming 2nd edition but with a lot of neat little quirks.

Any notion of how the rules for jamming worked post-Battle Manual?

Spend the turn stationary doing nothing at all. Then roll 4+ to clear the jam. Pretty harsh but it keeps those multilasers from getting out of hand I guess :)

Come 2nd edition, you could move normally, just not fire, and the jam was cleared without rolling dice.

yeah, I usually play it using the 2nd edition option. Though sustained fire weapons are /very/ deadly in RT so maybe it's not a bad idea to use it as written.
