Rogue trader wear...

I'm not sure if it qualifies as Rogue Trader since they are comparatively recent books, but Dan Abnett's Inquisitor and Ravenor books focus more on civilian life in the Imperium than most, and some of the descriptions of clothing are fantastic. Ravenor's leading Interrogator is something of a dandy, combines favourite military jackets with fashionably -cut civilian clothes and huge amounts of jewellery. Inquisitors' warbands enjoy the best of food, literature etc from across the galaxy (I remember that being true in the old Ian Watson books too), makes sense that these truly high status, well-travelled individuals will also collect fine clothing and set trends that go beyond individual planets.

hum, Ok, I thought I'd stop but you have points, it's just if you look at our own world given its scale you already get people whose world is about 20km in diameter but ye tstill feel the need to dress like guys on another continent (ever seen white european guys from rural places dress up like 50 cent?). Maybe there will be a sort of superstar in the 40k universe (think M.Jackson/Madonna/Lady Gaga) who is broadcasted all across the galaxy... people don't dress the way they do because they want to but because they're lead to believe it makes them look cool, that's what brands are here for and brands want to make money hence need to sell more.

Regarding military stuff , I suppose a lasgub is not very different from one place to another (at least marine tech doesn't change much) and though Valhalans and Vostroyans clearly differ it's more a local adpatatin than anything else, even our national armies come with different styles but it's just to differentiate corps and purposes, ot's not due to the fact the information is hard to convey.

All of this may be farfetched and I'm no socialogist so maybe I just don't get it.

I only want for this thread to be filled of cool fashion pictures so that people can pick to use in thei modelling and painting.

Hmm. . Fashion houses have cool-hunters (rogue traders, explorers), who go out onto the street (universe) to find out what the hip kids (brat gangs) are doing, feed that data back into the head-office design studios (mechanicum), who infuse it with quasi-religious overtones (transumanism, 16th Century occultism, mysticism and 'good taste') then regurgitate that onto the cat-walk and couture-shows for the fashionistas (high priests / inquisition) to fawn over. The look is then taken by the corporates (administorium), watered down and made 'safe' and commodified (STC pattern matched) and stratified into the luxury (aristos/ celebs) and street-ware "brands" (hive world juves), manufactured in sweatshops (forge worlds) and sold en-mass via retail (GW shops). Once into the retail chain, the cool kids reject 99% of it, because what was cool and interesting is now soul-less corporate garbage, pick and choose, (re)mix, (re)use, (re)cycle and match, cut-up, customise and reinvent and amplify elements which the cool-hunters then pick up on... and so the cycle continues until the whole worlds resources are used up.

Occasionally some of the cool kids make it as fashion designers, and develop their own "brands" which have greater or lesser impact. Where were we again?

Shoulder-pads will be big and spiky this season, and every season.

That's explanation enough for me Zhu, I'm convinced !

Now if I were to trade with strange beings and aliens, I'd probably want to look strange myself. That's what most cartel leaders tend to think at least. The process often involves showing even in their hairstyle they have one and only purpose and goal and that there is only ay to deal with things : theirs.
Do not expect reciprocity.

Planetary dignitaries would want to look like no-one else could; lots of other people I'd think would look like whatever they could afford. Good call on The Fifth Element, I think there's some great designs there.

Various upper-crust peeps (Ecclesiarchy, Noble Houses, Planetary Governors and entourage etc)

(apart from the presence of filthy Xenos in their midst anyway)

'Middling layers' - people with money, enough so they don't have to wear work clothes all the time, but not enough to buy planets:

Work, military, gang etc clothes:

(Van Saar anyone?)

(looks like more Van Saars)

(well dressed warrior-monks)

(what most people look like I guess)

(utilitarian wear - what most of the rest look like)

(work uniforms)

(what fairly average clothes look like after a few weeks of war)

(what no one should wear ever)

Some really nice finds here Red Orc, I especially like the "what most people wear" designs, I'd just throw a little more colours in to get that 80's touch and I think we're spot on. Some of the aristocrats are spectacular and even close to Genestealer infested nobility. Thanks for posting that amount of well sorted pictures !

Great collection. Always liked the Time Lords costumes.

Scifi-beige, alongside the Jedi.

Didn't Otto do a Zardoz Ork somewhere?
