• Welcome to the Golden Gobbo painting competition. If you'd like to read some of the ancient history you can on the Realm of Chaos 80s blog.

This competition is held some years and you'll find threads here describing how to enter and when the competition is running (typically after BOYL each year).

Other than the fame and wonderment of your peers there is often a prize kindly donated and you'll have the wonder of being awarded badges for your profile here.

GG 2026 Rogue Trader Assassin

This thread is part of the Golden Goblin painting competition 2026. Please see the entry thread for full details.
I've nearly completed my greenskin for Orctober & my mind is turning towards the Golden Gobbo coopetition.

IDEAVERDICT
Paint a 2nd edition legend or a judgeI have miniatures for both these things. I picked up a judge with the aim of painting it for this competition & adding it to my EALS. These would be pure painting projects and other entries have inspired me to be more ambitious.
Paint extra ammunitionThis is a project I'm excited about but I haven't done the weapon team yet so this is going on the backlog.
Hive TyrantI don't own a 2nd edition hive tyrant. My mate brought his when we put our tyranids on the table. The model didn't exist when 2nd edition 40K dropped. What if I made one based purely on the descriptions in Codex Imperialis/Codex Army Lists? Hybrid have a suitable model but I would have to purchase it. I may come back to this.
Rogue Trader Imperial AssassinI have a miniature, some green stuff & some ideas.

I have an RT Imperial Assassin undercoated right now, would be curious to see what you do with yours. I'm lacking a bit of inspiration for this ninja-ish chap at the moment!
I assume that is one of the Bob Naismith assassins. Great sculpts.
I've both of those assassins - one vaguely on the go at present and just needs some finishing (she's in shot here) and the fella I actually did as a Gobbo entry some years back! Both great models, but I did struggle with the colours. I look forward to seeing what you both do with yours!

load of pouches? RUN! It's Tod McFarland! (if you don't know, he was a ... erm.. artist who in the early 90s felt pouches were sooo "cool" that he designed tons of characters, mostly trying to out do the number of pouches they had. modern comics still at stuck thinking pouches are cool ¬_¬ look at the awful MCU costume redesigns.. yikes..

Oh, It's nothing against his art. Though Alot of what is credited to McFarland, look at the full credits. The problem is... he doesn't really do that much of the drawing. Even when he DOES do the pencilling, it's very rough and little for the inker to really put in most of the details and lines.. that said, if you read his comics (atleast the ones he published via his own companies or stuff) he does credit others.. as 'Art assistance' etc. but even in his early marvel days, he didn't really draw as much as he should have.

But his style is fine for the 90s 'extreme' style that everyone was trying to do. Not a huge fan of it, but it's fine for what it is.

well.. a bit of both really. Though I would say alot of McFarlane's capes were.. not flowing, but were insanely spread out and very impractical.

but yeah, I can say that Liefield was probably more on the pouches. It gets confusing between the image guys.. none of them ever got to the stage of being good (though were passable), mostly cause they got too much money too early so gave up. Larsen was probably the only one that really cared about doing his baby more then just marketing stuff and getting money from that.

Open to suggestions about what I should do with this guy.
The shuriken is cool, but perhaps it could be replaced with needle fingers? Or just painted as a glowing disc?

I guess the obvious bit would be to replace the sword with a sci fi blade, and of course, targeters, pipes/tubes, and other gizmos alongside the pouches are the usual means to sci fi up an historical or fantasy mini.

Look forward to seeing what you decide.
