I can understand how the fan community adopted that name, the range didn’t get fleshed out until later on.

Nice work on the paint job, would be interested to see more modern sculpts work in that scheme too.

That's what I've always heard it called.

I don't think so. Orclord of Stuff of Legends fame calls this figure a prototype tyranid. Protonid or proto-nid is understandable shorthand, IMO.

It has been yonks since I played RT and I never played 40k after RT, so is it related to later editions?

Yes, in rogue trader it's just a tyranid warrior. But they evolved beyond this into the plastics from advanced space crusade etc. without this one getting a real release.

The head was a bit goofy, but the rest was pretty impressive at the time. Given a good paint job, still hold up IMO.

Advanced Space Crusade ones were great but a different being completely. I see them as a different class. But then this was the time when they changed Genestealers to being tyrranids which was always a stupid move in my mind.

I love those guys. The less Alien and more dinosaur heads on them I definitely prefer to the next generation of tyranid warriors.
